2 In the Mexican state of Veracruz, we are realising the river related construction activities of a roadway tunnel under the Coatzacoalcos river. The tunnel links the city Coatzacoalcos on the Westside of the Coatzacoalcos River with Allende and the petrochemical industry on the east side. The tunnel runs for a total of 1,200 meters with 690 meters being located in the riverbed.. Country: Mexico Client: CTC Constructora Túnel de Coatzacoalcos S.A. de C.V. The contract consists of e concrete tunnel elements, each one of 138 meters long, 25 meters wide and 9.2 meters high. The tunnel accommodates 2 x 2 roadway lanes separated by an escape tunnel.the principal contractor constructs the concrete tunnel elements in the dry dock which is immediately adjacent to the immersion location. The product that VolkerCI brings on the market is; the design and construct of projects with immersion technology within their scope. Because projects can vary; this could mean that VolkerCI can play a part in several stages from Prequali cation to Installation tunnel elements. For all projects VolkerCI uses the facilities, personnel and experience of Van Hattum and Blankevoort (VHB), its sister company. Design VolkerInfraDesign (VID), a sistercompany of VolkerCI is experienced in the design of immersed tunnel elements. Design is done according to the company s management system which provides a structural design process to every speci c project. Typical joints and foundation techniques for tunnel elements are designed in many immersed tunnel projects in the Netherlands and International. Construction Construction of the elements have been done for many projects by VolkerCI internationally and VHB in the Netherlands. VolkerCI has much experience in building elements within a closed environment, whether if it is an existing dry dock (in Newcastle) or a self build dry dock (in Mexico). Due to the experience in building tunnel elements worldwide VolkerCI is able to build and manage projects on small and large scale basis. Transport and Immersion Technology VolkerCI is not only specialist in design and construction but known for their method in transportation and immersion technology. Due to the experience in previous projects several studies have been done regarding behaviour of tunnel elements during transportation and especially long transport times. Immersion technology comes from the techniques that were used in the projects for lowering elements on its foundation. Immersion techniques have evolved in the last 70 years of experiences, VolkerCI s latest project of immersed tunnelling is in Mexico where they use a catamaran to immerse tunnel segments.

The catamaran is specially designed for immersion of tunnels, caissons and intake/outfalls. The catamarans are a modular system, this means that it can expand or reduce its capacity and makes it easy to optimize the catamarans for new projects.
