Its historic name came from King Henry II ( ) who granted the Templars land across England. The Templar estate at Cressing Temple in Essex was one of the very earliest and largest Templar estates. On the northern side, beech trees and oaks are well spaced allowing light to cascade down onto the woodland floor. A small bench has been placed here and provides a great place to rest whilst you explore the woodland. To the south large carpets of bluebells cover part of the woodland floor, and a patch of bramble is a regular haunt for the resident muntjac deer. This woodland is an excellent example of varied deciduous woodland with lots of native flora. A haven for wildlife - badgers, muntjac deer and foxes are often seen. A recent survey counted over thirty different birds that inhabit this area including green woodpeckers, wrens and coal tits. Surrounded on three sides by areas of private woodland gives it a feeling of seclusion yet with the advantage of being very accessible for most vehicles. Conveniently located - just ten minutes from the A12 and 30 miles from the M25. Set on a gentle slope and with excellent local services including pubs and a village store within a short drive, this is an ideal wood for family forestry. Because the woodland is so special it has a tree preservation order on it. Location OS Landranger: OS No 168 Grid ref: TL Nearest post code: CM8 3NQ Directions From the exit of the A12 sign-posted to Witham go past a petrol station then straight over the roundabout onto Hatfield Road and then after about a quarter of a mile turn right into Maltings Lane. Continue straight over a roundabout until you stop at the 'T' junction of Spring Lane. Turn right and continue under a bridge until you come to some part time traffic lights, turning left here into Blue Mills Hill which is signposted Wickham Bishops / Golf Club. Carry on over the narrow river bridge and up the hill with woodland on your left. Just before the no overtaking sign there is a wooden five bar gate with our Woodlands.co.uk sign attached. Please park to one side of the gate so as not to block the access and please watch your safety on the road. Climb over the gates with care. The entrance to Knights Templar wood is on your right.
