1 Fisheries Officer, Japan Job Description Location: Responsible to: Responsible for: Salary: Working Hours: Contract: Holiday: Equal opportunities: MSC Japan Office, Tokyo Fisheries, Japan There is no line management responsibility Commensurate with qualifications and experience. Minimum 8 hours per day (40 hours per week). The MSC supports flexible working, so the pattern of hours may vary according to operational and personal needs. Weekend work may be required occasionally. The post holder will be required to undertake some international travel and overnight stays. No overtime is payable however under certain circumstances, Time Off in Lieu is granted in accordance with MSC policy. 2-years fixed term contract Every Saturday, Sunday and Japanese public holidays. Per year annual leave will be given after completion of probationary period. This will be increased to 11 days from April next year. JOB SUMMARY The Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) works to safeguard the world s seafood supply by promoting the best environmental choice, and is recognised internationally as a ground-breaking and credible solution to the serious environmental problem of overfishing. Reporting to the Japan Fisheries, the Fisheries Officer is responsible for outreach to the fisheries sector (catchers, fisheries co-operative associations, government, fisheries research organisations, NGOs and companies) in Japan and, potentially, more widely in the region as resources allow. The primary focus of this position is on preparation and implementation of the MSC s Group Fisheries Project in Japan, including increasing the awareness and support for the MSC program across a broad range of interest groups The Group Fisheries project will take up the majority of the workload of the successful applicant and outreach involves presentations, relationship building, explaining the MSC concept and certification programme to potential clients (fisheries and other organisations). It also involves working with fisheries as they develop plans to pursue MSC pre-assessment and full assessment. Additional work will include research and analysis, understanding target fisheries and commercial linkage within those fisheries, relationship building, and making presentations as needed. The job holder will be part of the MSC s Asia and Pacific regional team and will participate in the collective strategic planning and development of the organization in the region. B. RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE ROLE The overarching objective of the MSC Japan Office is that Japanese stakeholders adopt the MSC ecolabel and certification programme, and there are 3 key outputs to be delivered by the Japan Office. These seek to ensure that: Key Japanese fishery stakeholders accept the MSC as the de facto option for demonstrating sustainability. Key Japanese supply chain operators accept the MSC as the de facto option for demonstrating sustainability, significantly increasing the MSC's market presence by Japanese stakeholders and consumers recognise the MSC to be the most credible, robust and effective wild seafood ecolabel. These overarching objectives and the outputs are all elements of the MSC Japan Office s planning and monitoring documents. Collectively, these guide development of the MSC in Japan and allow monitoring against set targets. They will be key documents to guide the future work of the staff in Japan. The bulk of the Fisheries Officer s work will be focused on the first of these outputs. To achieve these objectives, the post holder will perform the following functions either directly or through working with other internal teams: Promote the role and value of the MSC s fishery certification system to Japanese stakeholders, including those in the fisheries sector, governments, research organisations, environment groups and other relevant agencies. Undertake outreach with key stakeholders in other Asia Pacific areas as time allows. Work with fisheries, participating in the Group Fisheries Project, to ensure a greater Page 2 of 5

3 understanding of the MSC programme in Japan. Liaise with fisheries participating in the Group Fisheries Project and supply accurate commercial and marketing information to the Japan team. Provide oral and written advice through briefings, submissions and reports to MSC staff. Respond to fishing sector enquiries, both internal and external. Liaise with other sections of the MSC to ensure an integrated approach to certification, marketing and communication. Progress reporting against agreed work plans C. PERSON SPECIFICATION Technical Skills and Experience Extensive knowledge of Japanese fisheries, and the seafood and fishing industries, with existing contacts and networks highly desirable. Relevant degree, diploma or equivalent a fisheries science or fisheries management qualification is an advantage. Relevant experience in fisheries management, assessment, research or consultancy is an advantage. Excellent computer and IT skills, including the use of standard software packages (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, SharePoint). Knowledge of third party certification schemes and the role of ecolabelling an advantage. Stakeholder Oriented Evidence of an ability to successfully build and manage relationships with colleagues, stakeholders and collaborators, with a people-centred approach to business and work essential. Ability to work with people from diverse backgrounds and cultures in a professional and effective manner. Management and Organisational Abilities Organised approach to project and work planning, as well as excellent personal organization, and time management skills. Evidence of ability to operate and get results in a busy environment with several tasks competing for priority. Communication Demonstrated proficiency in English. Demonstrated excellence in selling an idea or concept and winning support. Demonstrated excellence in spoken communication skills with a diverse range of people, including senior people in business and government. Demonstrated excellence in preparing and delivering presentations. Demonstrated high level of ability to manage internal and external relationships. Excellent attention to detail is required, balanced with an ability to get things done efficiently. A quick learner, happy to learn by doing with support from more experienced members of the team. Confident, with ability to gain credibility with, and respect of, staff at all levels of the MSC. Demonstrated cultural awareness and sensitivity to the diversity of values, views and approaches to issues relevant to the MSC programme by stakeholders around the world. Ability to travel on a regular basis, to work irregular hours, and to work effectively while traveling. Willingness and enthusiasm to contribute to MSC-wide responsibilities and development, where appropriate, in pursuit of the MSC s mission and vision. D.
