5 The Schl The Jhn Lyn Schl is a successful and well regarded independent HMC bys schl situated in Harrw n the Hill. We are apprximately twelve miles frm the centre f Lndn. The Schl is easily accessible frm tw nearby undergrund statins and is als served by a number f lcal bus rutes. The Schl was funded in 1876 by Jhn Lyn, a wealthy Elizabethan farmer. Tday the Jhn Lyn s Fundatin cmprises Harrw Schl, The Jhn Lyn Schl, Harrw Internatinal Schls and Jhn Lyn s Charity. The riginal buildings have been greatly augmented ver the years, mst recently with a multi-millin pund develpment f the new Sixth Frm Centre, a Science wing, secnd Drama Studi and Fitness Suite. A series f planned prjects will further enhance the quality f facilities at the Schl. The general standard f teaching accmmdatin is excellent, with subjects taught in clustered classrms. Departments are well resurced including interactive whitebards and dedicated ffice space. We have a sprts centre n the main site, which includes an excellent swimming pl, and ur 25 acre sprts grund, Sudbury, is just a few minutes away. The Schl aims t give an all-rund educatin, develping every by t his maximum ptential in a happy and caring envirnment. The emphasis is nt nly n high academic achievement but als n musical, artistic and creative skills, tgether with sprt and extra-curricular activities. Pupils jin us principally frm schls in the Lndn brughs f Harrw, Hillingdn, Ealing and Brent, but a gd number travel frm much further afield. The Schl is prud f its excellent academic reputatin and natinally we are ranked as ne f the tp-20 bys independent schls at bth GCSE and A-Level. We are an academically selective day schl and ur bys achieve impressive results. In 2015, 12% f all the A-Levels taken at the Schl were awarded the A* grade, whilst 91% were at grades A*-C. The Schl s pass rate amngst the 74 students was an impressive 99%. At GCSE, 30% f all grades awarded were at A* grade, whilst 86% f grades were awarded at the A*- B level. Our HPQ and EPQ results are utstanding, with 100% f ur students achieving grades A*-A. Amngst ur majr strengths are Drama and Sprt. Drama is taught as a specialist subject, with regular large-scale prductins and an annual musical perfrmed in Harrw Schl s Ryan Theatre. In Sprt, teaching is f a particularly high standard, and a number f bys cmpete at cunty and natinal levels. We have 60 teaching staff. All staff are expected t play an active part in the wider life f the Schl. The Jhn Lyn has its wn salary scale which exceeds that f the maintained sectr. 5

Jb Title: Hurs f Wrk: Department: Reprts t: Data Manager 40 hurs per week x 52 weeks per annum ICT Directr f Studies Cntext The Jhn Lyn Schl is, with Harrw Schl, part f Jhn Lyn s Fundatin. The Schl prvides an independent educatin fr bys between the ages f 11 and 18. Established in 1876, the Schl has an excellent and grwing reputatin fr academic success and fr valuing each by as an individual. Data Management plays a key rle in supprting and infrming bth the academic and bursarial supprt staff n key areas f teaching and administratin, respectively. Principal Rle The Data Manager is respnsible fr the administratin f data thrughut the Schl. The rle includes develping rbust and meaningful data cllectin strategies and encurages rigur acrss all parts f the schl cmmunity. The Data Manager will ensure that best use is made f the data s as t aid the day t day peratin f the Schl. Fr a suitable candidate there may be pprtunities fr line management f ther clleagues and the ptential t develp the Schl s new VLE (Firefly). Main Duties and Respnsibilities The primary rle f the data manager will be the effective and efficient management f the Schl s academic and pastral data and the peratin f the systems n which this data is recrded. As such, it is a key pst in ensuring that data is presented in a useful manner in such a way as t facilitate better utcmes fr the pupils. The rle can be adapted t fit the skill set f an utstanding applicant. The Data Manager will lead n: the peratin and management f the Schl s MIS, isams, and lead develpment f the database and thus the security f data, and data prtectin the inputting, updating and maintenance f pupil data, and templates; managing the prductin f pupil reprts; the prductin f pupil tracking dcumentatin; 6

7 the administratin f pupil attendance recrds; maintaining and updating the Schl s nline prtals; cmmunicatin with the Bursary n updating the Schl rll. Assisting the Directr f Studies in: the administratin f the target setting prcess fr pupils, examinatin data analysis and the use f Value-Added data; the administratin f CEM data testing f pupils; training and assisting academic and administrative staff n hw t use and interpret data and management systems; setting and cmmunicating reprting deadlines; the administratin f Internal Examinatins; the administratin f the annual ISC census and ther ISI inspectin dcumentatin requirements. 19 1 Infrmatin fr emplyers and applicants. On the 29 May 2013, legislatin 1 came int frce that allws certain ld and minr cautins and cnvictins t n lnger be subject t disclsure. In additin emplyers will n lnger be able t take an individual s ld and minr cautins and cnvictins int accunt when making decisins. All cautins and cnvictins fr specified serius vilent and sexual ffences, and ther specified ffences f relevance fr psts cncerned with safeguarding children and vulnerable adults, will remain subject t disclsure. In additin, all cnvictins resulting in a custdial sentence, whether r nt suspended, will remain subject t disclsure, as will all cnvictins where an individual has mre than ne cnvictin recrded. Changes t recruitment applicatin frms The DBS has been asked by emplyers whether r nt they shuld amend their recruitment prcesses when asking abut previus criminal ffences t take accunt f these changes. 20 2 Emplyers are encuraged t include the paragraph belw (prvided in agreement with the Ministry f Justice) in their standard applicatin frms. The amendments t the Exceptins Order 1975 (2013) prvide that certain spent cnvictins and cautins are 'prtected' and are nt subject t disclsure t emplyers, and cannt be taken int accunt. Guidance and criteria n the filtering f these cautins and cnvictins can be fund n the Disclsure and Barring Service website. What des filtering mean? Filtering is the term that the DBS uses t describe the prcess which will identify and remve prtected cnvictins and cautins s that they are n lnger disclsed n a criminal recrd certificate issued by the DBS. What PNC infrmatin will be shwn n a DBS certificate? Standard and Enhanced Criminal Recrd Certificates issued by the DBS will include details f cnvictins and cautins (which includes yuth cautins, reprimands and warnings) recrded n the Plice Natinal Cmputer (PNC). PNC infrmatin relating t prtected cautins and cnvictins will nw be filtered and will nt appear n the certificate. Further infrmatin is available n the DBS website. What PNC infrmatin will be filtered frm inclusin n a certificate? The rules as t when a cnvictin r cautin will be filtered are set ut in legislatin. This states that a certificate must include the fllwing: Cautins relating t an ffence frm a list agreed by Parliament (see belw) Cautins given less than 6 years ag (where individual 18 r ver at the time f cautin) Cautins given less than 2 years ag (where individual under 18 at the time f cautin) Cnvictins relating t an ffence frm a prescribed list (see belw) Where the individual has mre than ne cnvictin ffence all cnvictins will be included n the certificate (n cnvictin will be filtered) Cnvictins that resulted in a custdial sentence (regardless f whether served) v2.3

Changes have been made t the legislatin that determines which cnvictins and cautins can be taken int accunt by emplyers and ther bdies and what is included n a Standard and Enhanced Criminal Recrd Certificate issued by the DBS. These changes came int frce n 29 May What are the changes? The changes made t legislatin impact bth what an emplyer can ask an individual in relatin t cnvictins and cautins (fr example a selfdeclaratin n an applicatin frm f d yu have any cnvictins ) and what is released n a Standard r Enhanced criminal recrd certificate issued by the DBS. Can an emplyer ask an individual t declare details f all cnvictins and cautins? An emplyer can nly ask an individual t prvide details f cnvictins and cautins that they are legally entitled t knw abut. v2.3

22 4 Where a Standard r Enhanced certificate can legally be requested (where the psitin is ne that is listed in the Rehabilitatin f Offenders Act 1974 (Exceptins) Order 1975 as amended) and where apprpriate Plice Act Regulatins (as amended) an emplyer can nly ask an individual abut cnvictins and cautins that are nt prtected. If an emplyer takes int accunt a cnvictin r cautin that wuld nt have been disclsed they are acting unlawfully under the Rehabilitatin f Offenders Act Cmpletin f the DBS Applicatin Frm sectin e field 55 When cmpleting the DBS applicatin frm, a questin will be asked at sectin e field 55 if the applicant has ever been cnvicted f a criminal ffence r received a cautin reprimand r warning. The respnse t this questin shuld nly be in relatin t cnvictins r cautins which are nt prtected and thereby subject t filtering. In cnjunctin with the Ministry f Justice, we have prduced the fllwing guidance fr applicants and emplyers. Applicants cmpleting e55 shuld treat this questin as if they were being asked: D yu have any cnvictins, cautins, reprimands r final warnings which wuld nt be filtered in line with current guidance? Emplyers shuld make applicants aware f this advice in answering the questin. Has eligibility fr a DBS check been affected by these changes? N. Eligible psitins guidance can be fund n ur website. What if I dn t btain certificates frm DBS? There are a small number f defined psitins where details f all cnvictins and cautins may be taken int accunt. These psitins d nt cme thrugh the DBS prcess. Sme examples are plice vetting and firearms licence applicatins. If the psitin/ccupatin is cvered by the Rehabilitatin f Offenders Act 1974 (Exceptins) Order 1975 but nt subject t a disclsure by the DBS, the v2.3

The emplyer shuld, hwever, fllw existing guidance and cnduct a caseby-case analysis f any spent cnvictins and cautins and cnsider hw, if at all, they are relevant t the psitin sught. It wuld be advisable fr the emplyer t keep recrds f the reasns fr any emplyment decisin (and in particular rejectins), including whether any spent cnvictins r cautins were taken int accunt and, if s, why. If the emplyee fails t disclse any spent cnvictins r cautins when required by law t d s, he/she will nt be prtected frm the cnsequences f this (i.e. the ROA will nt apply).
