1 JOB DESCRIPTION LIBRARY & ARCHIVES ASSISTANT LIBRARIAN Part-time, term time nly Harrw Schl was funded in 1572 by a lcal yeman farmer called Jhn Lyn. He was granted a Charter by Queen Elizabeth I t build a schl which wuld prvide a gd educatin, free, fr 30 bys living in the Parish f Harrw. Over the past 400 years the Schl has becme fully barding and nw has nearly 800 pupils. It is ne f the mst prestigius independent schls in the wrld. The Vaughan Library The Vaughan Library is lcated in the beautiful Gerge Gilbert Sctt building and is at the centre f barding schl life bth physically and academically. It registers an average f ver 450 visitrs daily and is, therefre, a busy place where pupils and staff can enjy eceptinal resurces t enhance bth their academic and leisure interests seven days a week during term time. Library staff are key participants in the learning prcess f pupils. The Vaughan Library s cllectin includes utstanding literature f bth new and classic bks as well as access t printed and nline resurces facilitated thrugh friendly, qualified librarians. Access t electrnic resurces ensures that pupils and staff are cmfrtable with the changing needs f tday s infrmatin wrld. The Vaughan Library is pen fr a ttal f 60 hurs each week f term time frm 8.30 am t 6.30 pm and n a Saturday frm 8.30 am t pm. It is als pen between 2 pm and 5 pm n Saturday and Sunday afternns. The Archives The Schl Archives is situated at 84 High Street a shrt distance frm the Vaughan Library. It is a purpse built building which prvides fr the archival f the Schl s dcuments relating t the histry f the schl and its administratin. The principal cllectins, reflecting the rganisatin and develpment f the schl are Gvernrs minutes and accunt bks frm 1608, Head Masters and Masters papers frm 1800 and schl lists frm The majr cllectins include estate dcuments dating frm the 14 th century, literary and autgraph material which includes items relating t Richard Brinsley Sheridan, Anthny Trllpe and Lrd Gerge Byrn. Architectural drawings and plans f schl prperty are als held. The Archives als hlds nn-manuscript material including the Hills & Saunders phtgraphic cllectin f individuals, grups, teams and buildings in the lcal area frm

2 Bys are encuraged t use the Archive and many are regular users f the rm undertaking such valuable wrk as listing recrds, researching their Huse histry and preparing articles and ehibitins. In rder t prmte the Archive within the Schl, the Glland Sciety was set up. This rganises trips t archives utside the schl and brings in speakers t talk abut lcal histry, archiving in general r abut Old Harrvians. The Assistant Librarian will wrk under the directin f the Head f Library and Archives and will wrk mainly in the Vaughan Library r the Archives depending n requirements. It therefre requires a respnsible persn wh is adaptable and fleible. The pst hlder must be able t deal with pupils in a friendly but prfessinal manner. The Assistant Librarian must be able t develp an awareness f the stck f the Library and Archive. A knwledge f the IT systems which are in place t aid readers and supprt the curriculum. It is als imprtant fr the jb hlder t have an awareness f the primary purpse f the Library/Archives. They can then assist bys in the recvery f infrmatin and enhance the academic life f the schl.. The Assistant Librarian will be epected t carry ut the fllwing duties, which are nt ehaustive. 1. The Buildings: Be a key hlder and t check lcks and alarms when pening and clsing the library. Checking fire drs and windws. Dealing with visitrs Liaisn with Harrw Schl Security 2. The Library Desk: Operate cmputerized lans and returns. Keep a watch n security f the stck Assist with phtcpier/printers/cmputerised catalgue/scanners Assist with readers enquiries Take an active part in develping bys infrmatin retrieval skills Keep statistical recrds f use 3. The Library stck : Take an active part in the catalguing f new additins t stck Maintain physical cnditin f bkstck, i.e. jacket/spine /labels T assist in the care and preservatin f the archive cllectins and maintain gd rder in the strng rms. This is t include daily envirnmental mnitring Maintain reservatin request service T prduce necessary dcuments fr research use, t ensure their careful replacment Crrespnd with readers, give advice n research tpics in persn, by pst, telephne and . Further t assist users in the use f the internet and CD rm surces in the Archive area Returns, check returned bks and replace them n the shelves n a daily basis T maintain the Archive rm ensuring research aids can be assessed in gd rder Maintain the necessary systems and prcedures assciated with such as: Cpyright, phtcpying, bk stck etc 2

Archives Assist users and answer enquiries Help with access t archival material Assist with catalguing f Archives Assist in the care and preservatin f archive cllectins and maintain gd rder in the strng rms. Assist with the prductin f necessary dcuments fr research use t ensure their careful replacement T assist in maintaining the Archives ensuring research aids can be accessed in gd rder Give advice and infrmatin t users and answer queries n cmmn research tpics in persn, by pst, telephne and .
