1 Software Announcement November 29, 2005 IBM Rational for Terminal-based Applications V1.2 automates testing techniques Overview The IBM Rational for Terminal-based Applications is an Eclipse plug-in designed as a terminal emulator for hosting 3270 (IBM zseries ) and 5250 (IBM iseries ) terminal-based applications. This extension tool is built explicitly for Rational s advanced automated functional and regression testing tool, IBM Rational. The IBM Rational helps teams automate the testing of their terminal-based applications with the same tool they use to test their Java and Web-based applications. Highlights of this release include: Keyboard remapping of terminal sessions New support for character attribute testing New support for UNIX VT100 terminal protocol New support for UNIX VT100 DBCS code pages Compatibility with IBM Rational V6.1.1 release This improved process and productivity is supplemented by Rational s integration and relationship with the other tools in the IBM Rational Team Unifying Platform, which include: IBM Rational RequisitePro IBM Rational ClearQuest IBM Rational TestManager This integration facilitates team communication and asset-focused traceability required to ensure timely completion of quality-driven development projects. 2 Description Rational for Terminal-based Applications is one of the testing industry s most advanced automated functional testing tools. With the Rational for Terminal-based Applications product, project teams can test their zseries and iseries terminal-based applications with the same tool they use to test their Java/J2EE, and Web-based client-server applications. This extension delivers modern, automated test techniques to the teams responsible for verifying the proper functionality and usability of Cobol, CICS, PL/1 and other applications running on zseries and iseries machines. As a result, testing assets and procedures can be standardized across the organization, increasing the efficiency and breadth of testing initiatives. As this solution can be applied to all development efforts maintenance, legacy modernization, and greenfield development teams are ensured the ability to leverage their output and skills for new projects. Rational, with over twenty years experience helping customers build software applications, has found that the organizational approach to testing and quality assurance ranges from purely manual to fully automated to little or no testing at all. There is no inherently right way to test every project is different. However, regardless of the project, a certain baseline level of quality must be continuously ensured to support the successful operation of the business. Software applications whether serving the business, the customer or both must attain a minimum level of fitness, defined internally, to ensure they suitably address the problems for which they were defined. This fitness can be characterized as the sum total of characteristics running the gambit from functionality, usability, and reliability to scalability and maintainability. One of the keys to continuously ensuring this high quality is to constantly reassess the proper operation of applications from the perspective of a user. This is where automated functional and regression testing tools play a part. Automated regression testing allows teams to simulate the actions of users to increase the volume and quality of their system tests.
