3 Background information The Navratri/Dandia Raas Festival is a vibrant, colourful and exciting time for the Gujarati and Indian Community around the world. The Gujarati Samaj of the ACT Inc. (GSA) takes great pride in being able to share its cultural heritage in Australia through festivals like Navratri / Dandia Raas. Navratri / Dandia Raas is a popular festival in India. Navratri means nine days. These nine auspicious days are celebrated by communities getting together for nightly dances and feasts. This is celebrated once a year, around September- October. The dances enjoyed by the community during Navratri involve Dandiya (playing with two sticks) and Garba. These dances represent Gujarati folk dances, performed on traditional Gujarati folk music, enjoyed not only by the Gujarati community but by the wider community from the Indian sub-continent and the Australian community. This year, the auspicious days of Navaratri will be celebrated at ACT Basketball, 42 Oatley Court, BELCONNEN, ACT from 21 September to 30 September The event consists of playing traditional Garba and Dandiya Raas which are very popular amongst the Indian community in Canberra. Proposed 9 days event will be with live band. Over the ten days, the GSA expects more than participants. With the kind support of various sponsors in past; the GSA had successfully organised similar type of events in 2013, 2014, 2015 and About Gujarati Samaj of ACT Inc. The Gujarati Samaj of ACT Inc. is a: a not for profit organisation, supported by Gujarati community not only in Canberra, but also by inter-state Gujarati community members as well; managed by a team of motivated volunteers having a key objective of promoting the Gujarati culture and creating harmony amongst other communities; actively organising cultural activities and events for past 30 years; and foster Indian heritage by celebrating various Gujarati festivals and functions.
