IEA Coal and Electricity Data Systems Paris April 3 rd, 2014 Energy Training Week Energy Security Vladimír Kubeček Energy Data Centre International Energy Agency

Energy Security Energy security uninterrupted availability of energy sources at an affordable price We need information to be able to asses energy security IEA collect information for each particular energy Oil Natural Gas Coal Electricity

Energy Security - Coal Due to the nature of the coal resources which are geographically spread all over the World there is minimum risk of acute unavailability - IEA monitors long term development - Annual Coal Questionnaire - Full coal balance covering supply and demand However the international coal market is growing there is also need to monitor the actual market development - IEA monitors immediate market development - Quarterly Coal information - Production and trade data

Data Use Coal Information book Electronic online files Energy balances Environmental issues Data support for other IEA divisions/other organizations Country reviews Assessing security of supply Making policy and business decisions

Quarterly coal data The IEA also publishes quarterly coal production and trade quantities Steam and Coking coal and lignite production Coal imports and exports by type and trade partner It is difficult to access timely data for some countries Your assistance in identifying appropriate sources and contacts would be appreciated IEA points of contact

Energy Security - Electricity Electricity security is highly influenced by the security of the primary energy sources (oil, gas, coal, renewables) since its secondary energy nature as well as by unexpected natural disasters (Fukushima, Katrina, ) - IEA monitors long term development - Annual Electricity and Heat Questionnaire - Full balance covering supply and demand - Technical characteristics However the international coal market is growing there is also need to monitor the actual market development - IEA monitors immediate market development - Monthly Electricity information - Net Generation and trade data

Global Trends in Electricity Production Electricity usage patterns have changed over 38 years

Global Trends in Electricity Production ,115 TWh 22,126 TWh Global electricity generation more than triples in 38 years

Electricity and Heat supply and demand chain

Uses of the Data Electricity Information book Electronic online files Energy balances CO 2 emissions Energy efficiency indicators Data support for other IEA divisions/other organizations Country reviews Analysis - Assessing security of supply - Evolution of efficiencies - Environmental impacts Making policy and business decisions

Uses of the Data
