Smart port logistics: lessons from the experience of Port of Rotterdam and Port of Hamburg Dr. Behzad Behdani Wageningen University, Logistics and Operations Research Department Delft University of Technology, Transportation and Planning Department InexTeam B.V., (The Netherlands)
Some of on-going projects Trans-SONIC project (Transport Self Organization through Network Integration and Collaboration) Involved parties: Port of Amsterdam, TNO, SmartPort, EUR, TUDelft, TransFollow, ECORYS EURECA Project (Effective Use of Reefer Containers for conditioned products through the Port of Rotterdam), Involved parties: Port of Rotterdam, Deltalings-SmartPort, Hutchison Ports ECT Rotterdam (ECT), TUDelft, EUR, ABB, Seamark Reefer Service b.v., Frugiventa
Port evolution 4 generations of ports 1. The first generation port is a loading and unloading port (until the 1960s) 2. The second generation port is an industrial port (until 1980s) 3. The third generation port is a logistics / supply chain port (post 1980s) 4. Smart digital ports (now and the future), a Port 4.0 Source: Deloitte Port Services, Smart Ports
Digitalization of ports
Port of Hamburg Over 9 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) are transported through the port every year, and this is forecast to double by The port and city are impacted by up to 40,000 truck trips daily Challenge: limited space for port or infrastructure expansion To help keep traffic flowing smoothly, the Hamburg Port Authority (HPA) worked with big companies like SAP, T- systems and Cisco on a series of 20 projects collectively called smartport Logistics.
Port of Hamburg IoT for traffic and Infrastructure Management Start of IP-based sensor project 2011 HPA installed 300 roadway IP-based sensors to monitor traffic across major roadways in the port area (Port Road Management Center) >> predicting congestion + bridge maintenance schedules 1. Traffic management helps the port road manager monitor road traffic. 2. Structural sensors provide real time data on the condition of moveable infrastructure. 3. Environmental sensors deliver environmental data to improve analysis of the situation. 4. Smart Lighting enhances the safety and energy savings in the port. Source: Cisco Port road management becomes the basis for a more comprehensive smart port plan which was published in 2012 with the aim to make Hamburg a smart port.

Port of Hamburg DAKOSY system or the smartport logistics (SPL) app A Port Community System: all companies and public agencies involved in export, import and transit processes can transmit and receive relevant data and current status information SPL supplies current data on traffic, including a calculation of ETA at the terminal, also providing information on the current situation on parking in and around the port edeclaration software enables the user to download and make available all data required by local government agencies very conveniently and simply. Advance electronic notification for all container deliveries and collections by road Source: Hamburg Port Authority (HPA)

Port of Rotterdam The Port of Rotterdam is the largest port in Europe, located in the city of Rotterdam, Netherlands million TEU container throughput and 467 million cargo handling in 2017 with about 30,000 vessel calls. From 1962 until 2004 it was the world's busiest port.

Port Community System (Portbase) Portbase was created by a merger between Rotterdam s Port infolink and Amsterdam s PortNET. Portbase facilitates the exchange of data between companies and the exchange of information with government authorities in order to allow everyone to work faster, more efficiently and at lower cost. 16 Port Community System (Portbase) Portbase is Enabled by-services platform provides 40 different services in 4 main areas: 1. Vessel Call 2. Import Cargo Management 3. Export Cargo Management 4. Organization of Hinterland Transport More than 3000 EU companies are connected and sharing data Role-based authorization Other parties that serve a general good of the logistics sector are able to offer services here that have added value for the port community. 18 The next step
Port of Rotterdam Creating the Port of Rotterdam s digital twin The IBM IoT initiative will effectively create a digital twin of the port. This replica will mirror the port s operations and conditions, from ship movements to weather to water depth. The starting point is managing the berthing of vessels. IBM s new digital dashboard will take data from a variety of sources, including IBM s digital dolphins. These smart quay walls and sensorequipped buoys will provide data on the status of berthing terminals, as well as water and weather conditions. These digital dolphins will provide insights into the condition and utilisation of a berthing terminal and the surrounding water and weather conditions, enabling port operators to identify the optimal time for ships to dock, and where and when they can do so.
