1 STATES OF JERSEY JOB DESCRIPTION Department: Organisation: Job Title: Reports to: Education Highlands College Assistant Principal Employment and Skills Principal/Deputy Principal Salary: LEAD ( 67,870-71,124) This post is available from 1 st January This is a licensed position. 1 Job Purpose This role provides an exciting and new opportunity for an experienced and highly successful manager to take on senior management responsibility for developing and enhancing the college s training programme with and for employers on the Island of Jersey. The post holder will be the strategic and operational lead for work-based and workrelated learning at the college. The States of Jersey is its own jurisdiction and the college is funded and managed by the Department of Education of the States of Jersey. The island has its own Apprenticeship Service, Trackers, and this role will be the strategic link for apprenticeship training and for working with employers to develop the emerging skills strategy for the island. The college is seeking to appoint an individual who has had experience of working with employers, employer representatives and training agencies and who understands the complexities around delivering high quality day release and workbased learning. Working at Highlands and within the Jersey context provides the opportunity to develop innovative and flexible programmes that will meet the needs and interest of the island s employers. The role demands up to date knowledge of current and future developments in workbased and work-related pedagogy, curriculum and qualifications. The role has line management responsibility for the five curriculum areas which deliver significant work-based learning and training, (currently Child and Animal Care, Construction and Engineering, Culinary Arts and Tourism, Hair and Beauty and Health and Social Care) but the curriculum development and quality assurance aspects of the role, in relation to day release and workrelated/based teaching, learning and training, apply equally to all areas of the college. The post-holder will be responsible for managing the relationship between Trackers (the apprenticeship provider for Jersey) and the college and will be the college strategic lead for skills and to engage with the skills strategy for Jersey. The successful candidate will be member of the Senior Leadership Team and will participate in strategic decision making and 1 1

2 will have cross-college responsibility for advising on work based learning and pedagogy. The post-holder will also have ultimate responsibility for ensuring that all day release and workbased/related learning courses are financially viable. The ideal candidate will have well developed persuasive and assured management skills to motivate and support teachers and support staff. The individual will be joining a college that has been through transformational change in the last three years and is now set on a journey to be a student-centred institution providing the best possible post compulsory education and training for the people of Jersey. The post holder will need to be a hearts and minds orientated individual who is able to manage internal and external relationships in an authoritative but diplomatic way. Highlands College is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of young people and vulnerable adults. The college requires all staff and volunteers to share this commitment and are required to undertake an enhanced DBS check with barred list. Indicative knowledge, skills and attributes required for the role Knowledge and skills Essential Level 5 qualification in a vocational or technical subject (eg HND or Foundation Degree) A teaching qualification and English and Maths qualifications at level 2 Recent teaching, training and/or mentoring experience Track record of regular continuous professional development relevant to the post Significant experience of managing work-based learning and curricula High level of people management skills Significant experience of working with a range of employers from different sectors Successful experience of working with stakeholders involved in work-based training Able to work independently and manage own time effectively Excellent written and oral communication skills with individuals and groups Experience in most of the role specific accountabilities and the ability and potential to develop the skills necessary to carry out the role Experience of and ability to work in a team 2
