1 Special Wastes Certain wastes may require analytical dcumentatin, separatin, special handling r all three at the Mntezuma Cunty Landfill site. Please call the landfill fr any questins yu may have befre assuming the waste can be landfilled. This list includes, but may nt be limited t the fllwing: Cmpsting the fllwing materials can and shuld be separated fr cmpsting at the Mntezuma Cunty Landfill: Branches and yard waste Lawn clippings Please d nt put lawn clippings int the cmpst if yu have used any type f weed killer r weed and feed prduct as they will be harmful t the cmpst. If yu have used weed killers r pesticides f any kind please dispse f them with rdinary trash. Fd waste Fd waste can and shuld be separated fr cmpsting. Fd waste makes up 37% f ur waste stream and has the mst negative effects n the landfill. Over time, as rganic material break dwn, they can lead t methane prductin. Recycling Recyclable materials shuld be separated fr prper materials management. Mntezuma Cunty Landfill tries t keep materials ut f the waste stream that can be remade int useful prducts, s lng as thse cmmdities can be prcessed n site and can be mved t markets relatively easily. Items that yu shuld keep separated in yur lad fr recycling include: Cardbard cardbard, cereal bxes, and brwn papers Cartns milk, juice, and brth cartns can be prcessed fr recycling at the Mntezuma Cunty Landfill. Office paper which is anything that yu might get in yur mailbx, EXCEPT newspaper. News Print shuld be kept separate frm ffice paper fr recycling. Plastics 1&2 These plastics include water and sda bttles, milk jugs, shamp and cnditiner bttles, il jugs, laundry and dish detergent jugs. Please d NOT include glass r plastics 3-7 in yur recycling as they will drive up the cst f recycling, be landfilled any ways, and likely cause ther materials that may have therwise been recycled t be landfilled. Still Useable Items Items that are still useable can be resld in the landfill s up-cycle stre rather than be landfilled. Please cnsider reducing yur waste by allwing thers t use these items rather than filling up the landfill and wasting useable materials. Cnstructin and Demlitin Material C&D waste is material that is prduced in the prcess f cnstructin, renvatin, r demlitin f structures and is generally cmpsed f inert material. The structures include buildings f all types (residential and nn-residential), as well as rads and bridges. Cmpnents f C&D waste typically include cncrete, asphalt, wd, metal, gypsum wallbard, flr tile, and rfing. Land clearing debris such as slash, stumps, rcks and dirt will als be cnsidered C&D wastes. All demlitin and remdel prjects shuld be checked fr asbests by a certified asbests

2 inspectr prir t beginning the prject. Demlitin f building requires a Demlitin Permit frm the Air Pllutin Cntrl Divisin that includes a signature frm a Certified Asbests Building Inspectr. The signature certifies that the Asbests Cntaining Building Materials were remved prir t demlitin. The Fllwing wastes and materials are acceptable as C&D waste fr dispsal: Slash including small/large rts and stumps Wd including framing and frming lumber, plywd, laminates, and scraps Painted wd and ther painted materials Wall materials including sheetrck (drywall), gypsum, and plaster Dirt NO CONTAMINATED SOIL Plastics that include vinyl siding, drs, windws, flr tile, pipes, and buckets (cleaned and less than 10 gallns) Rubble including asphalt, cncrete, cinder blcks, and rck Glass excludes flurescent bulbs Rfing material including asphalt and wd shingles, slate, tile, and rfing felt Flr cverings including wd, tile, carpe, and vinyl Wall cverings including ceramic tile, wall paper, and siding Insulatin batting r walls Fixtures including bathtubs, tilets, sinks, and faucets Treated Lumber The fllwing wastes and materials are NOT acceptable as C&D waste: Asbests Cntaining Materials Yard waste including grass clippings and leaves which shuld be cmpsted Husehld and municipal trash Uphlstered furniture and mattresses Cntaminated sils (petrleum, drs, disclratin, r unknwn substances) Electrnic waste such as cathde ray tubes (e.g., TVs, cmputer mnitrs) and cnsumer electrnic devices (e.g., cell phnes, cmputers, stere equipment, vide recrders, micrwaves, etc.) Flurescent lights and ballasts Cntainers larger than 10 gallns (unless triple rinsed and crushed) 55-falln drums (unless triple rinsed and crushed) Waste paints, slvents, sealers, adhesives, r similar materials Appliances, large r small Electrical equipment cntaining liquid, il, r asbests Tires - The landfill will nt accept waste tires fr dispsal. Hwever Mntezuma Cunty Landfill is a Registered Waste Tire Cllectin Facility and in accrdance with state law can cllect tires fr recycling. Please keep tires separated fr recycling. There is a charge assciated with recycling tires.

3 Lead Acid Batteries Lead acid batteries are nt accepted fr dispsal at the Mntezuma Cunty Landfill. Mntezuma Cunty Landfill will accept lead acid batteries fr recycling, hwever, the landfill will nt pay a cre charge fr the batteries in rder nt t cmpete with private businesses that will. Please cnsider taking yur lead acid batteries t a business that will pay yu the cre charge. Used/Waste Oil The landfill des nt accept waste il at all. Ptential waste il cntainers, drums and suspicius lads will be inspected fr the presence f waste il. Cntaminated Sils Sils cntaining freign substances nt native t the sil itself are cnsidered t be cntaminated. Generatrs wishing t dispse f cntaminated sil shuld cntact the landfill and characterize the material. Petrleum hydrcarbns and slvents are cmmn cntaminants. Hwever, the analytical testing may vary depending n the type(s) f hydrcarbn; therefre, knwledge f the surce r histry f the waste is necessary t limit the amunt f testing that will be required fr acceptance at the landfill. As with all ther wastes, cntaminated sils will be accepted prvided they d nt exhibit any characteristics f hazardus waste as defined in 6 CCR Part 261 and that n cntaminate cncentratins exceed allwable levels. The fllwing tests may be required: Paint Filter Test (EPA methd 9095) Ignitability, Crrsivity, and Reactivity Characteristics TCLP, VOCs, SVOCs, Pesticides, PCBs, Metals and (AS, Ba, Cd, Cr, Pb, Hg, Se, Ag) BTEX NOTE: Additinal testing fr Plynuclear Armatic Hydrcarbns (PAHs) is necessary if any TPH cncentratin is abve 5,000 mg/kg (ppm). Asbests Waste Mntezuma Cunty Landfill will NOT accept friable asbests cntaining material. Fr building remdels and demlitins the State air pllutin regulatins require an inspectin fr asbests cntaining materials by a Certified Asbests Building Inspectr ( prir t renvatin r demlitin f any building structure r facility cmpnent with an amunt f asbests cntaining materials that exceeds regulatry threshlds (1%). Electrnic Wastes Accrding t the Electrnic Waste Dispsal Ban by CDPHE, effective July 1, 2013, electrnic devices banned frm landfills includes televisins, CPUs, cmputer mnitrs, peripherals, printers, fax machines, laptps, ntebks, ultra-bks, net bks, electrnic tablets, DVD players, VCRs, radis, steres, vide game cnsles and vide display devices with viewing screens greater than 4 inches diagnally. Mntezuma Cunty Landfill des cllect electrnic waste fr recycling. There is a charge assciated with recycling electrnics. Please keep electrnics separated in yur lad as the law requires them t be separated fr recycling.

4 Animal Wastes Please be prepared t state the cause f death t the scale peratr. Animal wastes cntaining frmaldehyde are nt acceptable fr dispsal. Mntezuma Cunty Landfill will nt accept animal wastes cntaining pathgens. Wastes cntaining pathgens are cnsidered bimedical waste and are nt accepted at this facility. Radiactive Waste Radiactive material by regulatry definitin means any slid, liquid, r gas which emits radiatin spntaneusly. N licensed radiactive materials r waste are acceptable fr dispsal at this landfill and must be dispsed f at an apprpriate facility licensed fr radiactive waste. Empty Cntainers 55-galln drums and inner liners are acceptable fr dispsal when they are cmpletely empty, rinsed, and with an MSDS sheet describing the frmer cntents. Residual sludge r ther slid type waste in a cntainer must be identified thrugh the waste characterizatin prcess and is NOT ACCEPTABLE withut apprpriate analytical testing. The required testing will be determined n a case-by-case basis accrding t the type f waste in the cntainer. Residual sludge r liquids must be slidified befre it will be cnsidered fr dispsal. Frzen materials are nt cnsidered slidified. A cntainer is cnsidered empty when there are n remaining sludge r ther slid type waste and when prper and apprpriate rinsing has been cmpleted. A prper rinse is perfrmed by flushing cntainers three times, each time using a vlume f slutin equal t apprximately 10% f the cntainer s capacity. Liners must als be prperly rinsed prir t acceptance. All cntainers larger than 5 gallns must als be empty. N residual liquids will be acceptable. All pesticide and herbicide cntainers f 5 gallns r greater, require rinsing as previusly described. All drums and ther cntainers must have at least ne end pen r have a sufficient amunt f hles punched int the cntainer s that a visual inspectin can be cmpleted. Residual waste in any cntainer (greater than 5 gallns) is unacceptable. Mntezuma Cunty Landfill reserves the right t deny any cntainers. White Gds Large enameled husehld appliances are accepted at the Mntezuma Cunty Landfill. They must be separated fr apprpriate recycling. There is a charge assciated with the handling and recycling f these items. Mntezuma Cunty Landfill must recver refrigerant frm refrigerant-cntaining appliances prir t recycling these appliances. Please keep all appliances separated in yur lad, as yu will be directed t put them in the apprpriate areas t be recycled. Autmbiles, Mtrcycles, and Small Engines Autmbiles are nt accepted at the landfill. Mtrcycles, ther vehicle bdies, and small engines will be accepted fr recycling at the landfill but must have a title r bill f sale therwise they will be turned away. All engines and mtrs must be empty f all liquids, including, but nt limited t, fuel, mtr il, antifreeze, transmissin/brake fluids, etc., prir t acceptance. There can be n batteries; therefre, any battery must be remved frm any mtrcycle r ther vehicle bdy prir t entering the landfill.

5 Paint Wastes (Cntainer, Bulk Residue, Dust) Paint wastes that have been dried t a slid, nn-liquid, nn-sludge state are acceptable at the landfill with minimal characterizatin. Lids must be remved frm all paint cntainers s the waste can be visually inspected by landfill persnnel. These d nt require testing. Paint chips and dust shuld be mistened and cntained in plastic bags and dispsable cntainers t reduce the amunt f dust generated during transprt and dispsal. All ther wastes cntaining paint, including sil and waste frm lead paint mitigatin prjects, may cntain heavy metals and, therefre, must be characterized fr lead, cadmium, and chrmium. Sludges Sludge prduced as a by-prduct f a manufacturing r ther industrial facility may be acceptable fr dispsal if it is nt cnsidered a hazardus waste and it passes the Paint Filter Test. Nn-digested sewage and septic tank pumpings are NOT accepted at the landfill. A wastewater treatment plant prduces a digested de-watered sludge which is acceptable at the landfill, prvided the sludge is characterized apprpriately and submitted fr apprval t the landfill manager peridically. Wastewater treatment plant sludge shuld be characterized Metals (8 RCRA metals), Vlatile Organic Cmpunds, Semi-vlatile Organic Cmpunds, Paint Filter Test, and Radilgical (EPA 900). Waste with measured ttal alpha radiatin levels greater than 40pCi/g f dry sludge will nt be accepted fr dispsal. Other Special Wastes Other special wastes can be accepted at the landfill n a case by case basis. A special waste is a waste that may require special handling and/r special dispsal methds. A waste may be a special waste because f its quantity, cncentratin, physical, chemical, r bilgical characteristics.
