We aim to do this through the conservation of threatened species and ecosystems worldwide, choosing solutions that are sustainable, based on sound science and take account of human needs. We have become a trusted entity in the world of conservation. Today FFI is active in over 40 countries. PRÍNCIPE With important forest and marine ecosystems and levels of endemism comparable to the Galapagos Islands, Príncipe is recognised world-wide for its high biodiversity and is designated as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. The Fundação Príncipe Trust (FPT) is one of the few established NGOs operating on the island. It was established in 2015 to promote sustainable development and biodiversity conservation, through projects that strongly focus on supporting the local community and building local capacity. FFI has established a partnership with the FPT to strengthen the conservation of both marine and terrestrial biodiversity, integrated with a strong focus on the development of sustainable livelihoods approaches, on the island of Príncipe. FFI currently has two members of staff seconded to and working closely with the FPT team to deliver an exciting programme of activities including biodiversity and social surveys and assessments, strengthening marine and terrestrial protected areas, species and habitat conservation projects and capacity building support to local conservation agencies, closely integrated with the promotion of sustainable livelihoods approaches for local communities. Engaging proactively with people to improve local culture and economy is central to our strategy in Príncipe: local support is critical to this work and local people stand to gain the most from the protection of the island s biodiversity. THE OPPORTUNITY We are seeking qualified candidates to manage the in-country implementation and delivery of an exciting new project to establish the first marine protected areas around the island nation of São Tomé and Príncipe. Employed directly by FFI and under secondment to FPT, you will be based on the island of Príncipe. You will contribute to island wide conservation activity leading on marine protected area establishment, community co-management of fisheries and investigations into the scope of Illegal, Unregulated and Unreported fishing (IUU) activities, while liaising with both regional and national government and project partners on both islands to ensure the success of this project. Strong project and people management and leadership skills are essential to the role to ensure a professional and motivated team that delivers effectively against project aims, objectives and timelines. The role also requires a skilled and credible communicator, who is confident in developing and managing relationships internally and with partner organisations and relevant

3 stakeholders, including regional and national government. You will have proven experience in conservation project management with demonstrable skills and experience in engaging local communities in conservation and the development of sustainable livelihood initiatives, for example leveraging conservation contributions from the tourism sector. A strong team player, you will enjoy working in a dynamic team environment where creative approaches and thinking are required to deliver project concepts. Experience raising funds for projects will also be an advantage. A Master s degree or equivalent level qualification in a relevant discipline and strong experience in a related role and in working in remote and sometimes challenging environments are expected. 4 JOB DESCRIPTION Job Title: Reporting to: Working with: Responsible for: Purpose: Project Manager, São Tomé & Príncipe Programme Manager (Marine), Eurasia FPT Director, Conservation Programme Assistants and other FPT colleagues, national counterparts and other stakeholders on all aspects of the job FPT Project Assistant FPT Field Assistant The role of the Project Manager is to lead on the delivery of FFI s commitments within the Blue Action Fund (BAF) project and ensure the effective and efficient implementation of the project on São Tomé & Príncipe working in close collaboration with FFI colleagues, partners and consultants. The project s overall goal is to establish a network of marine protected areas across São Tomé & Príncipe using a co-management approach. Specific Duties: Project Management and Development Manage the in-country implementation and delivery of FFI s commitments within the project Ensure local project partners on Príncipe and support local project partners on São Tomé to meet their commitments, ensuring up-to-date workplans and budgets are in place to meet project aims, objectives and timelines and ensuring that projects are implemented in line with workplans and within budget Manage and motivate in-country FPT staff through objective setting, continuous performance management and annual appraisal, training provision and personal development planning Ensure that appropriate project monitoring and evaluation takes place and work with the Programme Manager to review the results and adapt the project as required Work with the Programme Manager to put in place required contracts and agreements with project partners and other project stakeholders, in accordance with FFI policies and procedures Establish effective communications and manage relations with local project partners and other stakeholders Maintain effective dialogue with Government across both islands Support and input to donor report writing for both the BAF and co-funded projects, and ensure that reports required for donors are delivered to a high standard and on time in accordance with donor requirements Provide proactive input and support to new project development to support the securing of cofunding, and ensure post project sustainability

5 Finance and administration Working with Cambridge based staff: Support compliance with funding agreements, including co-financing, reporting and procurement requirements Ensure financial records for Príncipe-based expenditure are accurate, including supporting the preparation of monthly cashbooks Technical Support Ensure the robust design and delivery of project activities, in keeping with the work plan Ensure and lead implementation of specific project activities and deliverables Ensure that field operations are conducted to a high standard of health, safety, welfare, environmental good practice and cultural sensitivity, in line with FFI global policies and procedures and any national policies and procedures General Represent FFI and FPT locally, maintaining positive relationships with government, local communities, and other key stakeholders and partners and attend national and regional level meetings as required Ensure that excellent communication is maintained with the designated line manager and Director, FPT Perform any other tasks that may be requested from time to time that are appropriate to your skills and experience PERSON SPECIFICATION Essential Skills Excellent ability to manage conservation projects and teams Strong technical skills relating to marine ecology and conservation Proven ability to collaborate effectively with partner organisations, including governments, national and local NGOs, community groups and businesses Ability to communicate publicly (written and oral) and with a wide range of audiences Fluency in written and spoken English Proficiency in Portuguese Proven project financial / budget management skills Desirable Scuba diving qualification Reef check qualification Marine biodiversity field identification Bird identification Knowledge of MARXAN software Knowledge and experience A Masters degree or equivalent level qualification in a conservation / natural resource management or relevant social science field Substantial leadership experience in a relevant organisation / working environment Substantial relevant experience of working on marine conservation and / or environmental or relevant social issues Experience in fisheries management from community level to engaging with governments on Illegal, Unregulated and
