We are a small team based in Putney. Our MD is David Kester, former head of the UK Design Council. Rob Wood, who runs our HS2 practice, worked on the design of Waterloo International, Heathrow Express, Crossrail and the Jubilee Line. 5 Senior Project Manager (HS2) Description The design strategy consultancy, DK&A, is running the Design for HS2. This is one of the most exciting national initiatives and the largest infrastructure project in Europe. Our role in 2017/18 covers a wide remit from identity design, public art strategy, to establishing the some of the key mechanisms for managing design across many disciplines on a complex programme. As our role has expanded, so we are now recruiting. This new role will be a key member of a small and highly embedded team. You will report directly to our HS2 Project Director - the rail architect and brand designer, Rob Wood. You will be a key new appointment at DK&A working within a small growing consultancy. This role will suit someone who is steeped in design and design management probably architecture or engineering but sees their best contribution as a project manager who helps make things happen. Salary: Circa 40-50k depending on experience. Key tasks 1. Executing projects. You will be supervising and orchestrating the effective running of strategic design projects, involving: making an active contribution to the content and ensuring timely, quality delivery to budget. Over the next twelve months, this will involve taking direction from the project director on a range of high profile design initiatives for HS2 (see attached). 2. Scheduling and planning. You will be driving the planning and detailed scheduling of complex projects for HS2, involving: setting up, agreeing and maintaining robust project plans, ensuring these are well scheduled and that interdependencies and risks are managed. Maintaining and managing a shared scheduler and risk register. 3. Budget and resource management. You will supervise the HS2 budget working directly with our MD and the Project Director. This will involve helping estimate budgets, monitor resources, report and help with invoicing. You will also maintain and update the project risk register. 4. Client reporting and communication. You will help maintaining good communication and stakeholder relationships both won your projects within DK&A and with the client. This will involve maintaining effective clear reporting, meeting management. 5

6 5. Project Systems. You will maintain and develop robust systems for project management. We want our processes to work effectively for HS2 and also to provide good templates for DK&A. As part of this you will provide mentoring and training within DK&A on project management. 6. Strategy contribution. You will be an essential member of a small team contributing to strategy and content. You will have knowledge to bring and be a fast learner so you can help shape plans for DK&A and our clients. Skills and experience Design management; understanding of design preferably on rail projects Essential: minimum 3 years design experience in a project or related role Desirable: background in design management; engineering; architecture. Sound financial: budget management for complex projects Essential: minimum 3 years administering budgets in excess of 250k Desirable: qualification, training around budget management Strong written: quick and capable reporting. Essential: minimum 3 years minuting, writing project reports Desirable: commissioning writers and /or editing; authorship of reports Organisational: naturally organised; proven ability with project systems Essential: minimum 3 years hands-on running complex, fast projects Desirable: trained user of proven methods systems e.g. Scrum master; Agile; use of on-line tools. Communications: able communicator who can represent DK&A Essential: minimum 3 years experience representing a project; hosting meetings; negotiating; presenting. Desirable: training/qualification in above skills We expect that our new Senior Project Manager has held a comparable role and cut their teeth on a relevant project of complexity. 6

However, a usual week will involve travel. In any week, you will probably spend at least one day based at HS2 in Birmingham and one day based at HS2 in London. Your travel costs outside London will covered. Some of the projects you will be part of and help make happen: Design Group. HS2 is a lean client which means that it acts as the ultimate commissioner with many contractors delivering the work. Within the business it also has design leads embedded with key departments. You will be working with DK&A and the core design leadership to create the main forum for design. Design assets. DK&A have established some key design assets for HS2 such as a Design. We now need to build on this and create a Design Handbook and other elements that guide and signpost. You will orchestrate this working to Rob Wood and oversee relevant freelancers and suppliers such as writers, printers and film-makers. Contractor Hot Start. HS2 is inducting a large number of suppliers over the coming months. You will be working with the team to devise and implement a programme of briefing and training events to induct them and help the in-house design team to communicate their aspirations for the project. Design Studio. DK&A are scoping a design studio so that HS2 has the capacity and capability to showcase and prototype design work in progress. You will be working with Rob Wood to help make this a reality. Public Art Strategy. A common approach document setting out the HS2 plan with exemplars as the starting point for commissioning. We are working with one of the UK s leading cultural strategists. You ll be helping pull the project together including working with a picture researcher, editor, and designer. 7
