Program Description Professional associations have provided stability and focus for generations of librarians. The continued value of our professional associations rests with their ability to envision the future and evolve. So what might our associations look like 10 to 20 years from now? What forces are at work that could cause seismic shifts in our profession? And how are our associations preparing for them? Join the SLA Maryland Chapter for an evening of provocative conversation featuring special guests, Maureen Sullivan, President of the American Library Association and Deb Hunt, 2013 President of the Special Libraries Association. Our speakers will address key issues facing associations including: What will be required of tomorrow's leaders? How will communities of practice impact our associations? What new mutually-beneficial opportunities exist for collaboration? What calculated risks should be taken to realize transformational change? 2 Target Audience We are targeting Movers and Shakers from all types of library and information management settings including corporate, associations, public, government, military, legal, academic, knowledge managers, researchers and analyst. Members of the ALA & SLA national Boards, SLA Fellows, SLA & ALA association management, the LIS press, leaders from AALL, MLA, and ASIST are among the expected attendees. 6 About the Speakers Maureen Sullivan Sullivan assumed the ALA presidency in June 2012, following the ALA Annual Conference in Anaheim, Calif. She will serve a one-year term as president and a one-year term as immediate past president. Ms. Sullivan is a organizational development and transformation consultant to numerous libraries of all types academic, public, school, law, health sciences and other special libraries and library consortia. In addition to her consulting work, Sullivan is a professor of practice in the Ph.D. program, Managerial Leadership in the Information Professions, at the Simmons College Graduate School of Library and Information Science. She spent 12 years as the human resources administrator in the libraries at the University of Maryland ( ) and at Yale University ( ). She was also the management training specialist at the Association of Research Libraries ( ). Ms. Sullivan is past president ( ) of the Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL). She was also president of the Library Administration and Management Association (now LLAMA) for the term. Her other ALA activities include work as co-chair of ALA President Roberta Stevens initiative, Our Authors, Our Advocates, co-chair of the Emerging Leaders Initiative ( ), chair of the Office for Library Personnel Resources Advisory Committee ( ) and chair of the Minority Fellow Program Advisory Board ( ). She was chosen the 2010 Academic/Research Librarian of the Year by the Association of College and Research Libraries. Her other honors include the American Library Association s Elizabeth Futas Catalyst for Change Award in Deb Hunt Deb Hunt assumes the Presidency of SLA in January She served as a director on the SLA Board of Directors ( ), chaired the creation and recent update of online professional development initiative, SLA's 23 Things, and is currently chair of the Leadership and Management Division (LMD) Nominating Committee. She has served on the Information Ethics Advisory Council ( ) and is currently on the Professional Development Advisory Council (2008-present). Deb received an SLA Presidential Citation for 23 Things and was awarded the Karen J. Swit Leadership Award from the Leadership and Management Division in Deb was featured in the SLA Member Profile in the July 2006 issue of Information Outlook ("As Easy as Jumping Off a Cliff") on pages page 6 of 8

7 Deb has been a leader in the San Francisco Bay Region Chapter, serving as chapter president, initiating the first chapter listserv in 2000 and chairing various committees. She received the chapter's Professional Achievement Award in She is also a member of the Silicon Valley Chapter. She has been profiled by Information World Review (Feb. 5, 2010) and has authored many articles, including "Demonstrating Your Value 2.0" in Best Practices in Government Libraries She is a member of the Knowledge Management, Information Technology, and Leadership and Management Divisions as well as the Content Buying and Consulting sections of LMD. Deb is an independent information professional and Principal of Information Edge, which specializes in value-added research, knowledge services, enterprise content management, and library creation and automation.
