1 Edmonton Catholic Schools is now accepting applications for the position of SOCIAL WORKER, Assessment Support Intervention and Success Team (Existing position) Edmonton Catholic Schools is a large urban school district whose mission is to provide a Catholic education that inspires students to learn and that prepares them to live fully and to serve God in one another. The District is comprised of over 39,000 students and 3,500 employees in 89 schools and other sites. The District requires a Social Worker to participate on the Assessment Support Intervention and Success Team (ASIST) to meet the needs of junior and senior high school students. The team works in collaboration with other community partners including Edmonton Police Services and agencies providing mental health and social services. The job partners with consultants/teachers and works with students identified by School Operation Services as experiencing on-going difficulties achieving success in their registered school. The primary role of the job is to support and empower students to continue their education successfully and provide support to the parents/guardians/families of the students. The job participates as part of the Assessment, Support, Intervention and Success Team (ASIST) to meet the needs of junior and senior high school students. The ASIST team works in collaboration with other community partners including Edmonton Police Services and agencies providing mental health and social services. The job partners with a consultant/teacher and works with students identified by School Operation Services as experiencing on-going difficulties achieving success in their registered school. Conduct psycho social of students and families to determine the level of service required in each case 2. Establish action plans and implement goals with students to address identified areas using Individualised Program Plans as well as district assessments. 3. Communicate, information pertaining to progress with students, parents, guardians, school staff and other stakeholders through weekly meetings. 4. Participate in student intake and provide counselling services to students, families and staff including referral to appropriate resources, program placement and completion of academic intellectual testing. 5. Provide crisis intervention to students and families including involvement of Children s Services, Edmonton Police Service and Alberta Justice 6. Refer students and families to appropriate programs and supports to address identified needs. 7. Monitor and document impact of supports, as well as provide a year-end summary and recommendations, including program placement if needed. 8. Offer social services, related resources and information to students, families and schools such as student s diagnosis, community resources, counselling, recreation and other supports. 9. Consult with experts to provide support to students with various disorders, conditions and delays 10. Liaise with district specialists, special education staff and community supports to align and collaborate on multidisciplinary approaches to support 11. Participate in long- and short-term strategic planning for the ASIST program 14. Participate on multi-disciplinary teams to provide a broad range of support to students 15. Maintain professional registration through training development activities including conferences, in-services, workshops, peer support, literature searches and research PROBLEM SOLVING: Describe difficult or challenging situations the position is typically expected to solve; the degree of originality of the solutions; assistance available; and any problems or decisions that must be referred to a supervisor for resolution or approval The job s primary focus is problem solving with the problems often unknown and solutions varied as they relate to a wide range of client needs. The job identifies a problem then must determine alternative solutions. This includes the ability to engage difficult clients. Ability to assess for or provide interim supports to students and families who are waiting for ongoing service providers. Willing and able to make referrals to appropriate delegated agencies (ie. Child and Family Services or Police Services) where deemed necessary. Able to advocate for client services when difficulties regarding accessibility are encountered. Provide and access peer support from other Registered Social Workers within the District. Where appropriate, involve leadership teams, that include consultants, school principals, and School Operation Services in finding solutions. ORGANIZATIONAL DATA: Identify any measurable areas upon which the job has either direct or indirect impact. Measures that may be included are: number of staff supervised, annual operating budget, number and size of projects, clients served or any other significant values. Knowledge & Experience Competencies Degree or diploma in Social Work and registration with the Alberta College of Social Workers Alberta Collage of Social Workers, plus a minimum of three years directly related experience Extensive experience in working with adolescents, families and social service agencies. Knowledge of various community agencies and adolescent development, requirements of special needs students, individual and family therapy, group dynamics, different theories and methods of communication Knowledge of: emotional/behavioural disorders, special needs education, family violence, poverty, suicide prevention, addictions, bereavement and adolescent relationships Working knowledge of cross-cultural competencies and training Knowledge of FOIP Legislation General knowledge of the district/department operations, business, goals and objectives.
