3 WELCOME Cmpleting AIA s Initial Prfessinal Develpment (IPD) ensures that yu have demnstrated the ability t apply theretical knwledge, prfessinal and practical skills in a wrk envirnment. AIA s IPD Requirements have been established within the framewrk f guidelines issued by the Internatinal Federatin f Accuntants (IFAC) and prvide the fundatin fr the Cntinued Prfessinal Develpment (CPD) prgramme f lifelng learning, essential fr every prfessinal accuntant. N.B. The IPD Requirements utlined in this guide d nt cver the Recgnised Prfessinal Qualificatin (RPQ) fr Statutry Audit, available in the UK/EU. 7 2.0 THE IMPORTANCE OF IPD Initial Prfessinal Develpment (IPD) is defined as wrk experience gained by perfrming the wrk f a prfessinal accuntant under qualified supervisin at prgressive levels f respnsibility. The AIA prfessinal accuntancy qualificatin is designed t prduce prfessinal, cmpetent accuntants and IPD requirements play an essential part in this prcess. T qualify as an Internatinal Accuntant yu must demnstrate academic ability and technical knwledge by passing the AIA exams, and demnstrate the applicatin f prfessinal knwledge, prfessinal skills and prfessinal ethics, values and attitudes in the wrkplace. IPD prvides a framewrk in which t develp prfessinal skills and cmpetence in the wrk envirnment by requiring trainees t: Wrk at prgressive levels f respnsibility; Develp an awareness f the wrking envirnment, an understanding f relevant rganisatins and hw business wrks; Apply technical knwledge and relate accunting wrk t ther business functins and activities Develp and apply prfessinal cnduct in practical, real-life situatins; Enhance their Infrmatin Cmmunicatin Technlgy (ICT) cmpetency. 7 Assciatin f Internatinal Accuntants 2017

8 3.0 IPD REQUIREMENTS 3.1 OVERVIEW Yur IPD shuld demnstrate technical cmpetency tgether with the ability t apply prfessinal skills, values and ethics in the wrkplace. AIA requires a minimum f three years IPD, which must be: relevant carried ut at prgressive levels f respnsibility fully dcumented reviewed and certified by a prfessinally qualified accuntant (an AIA qualified Accuntant, a member f an IFAC member bdy, r a member f a statutrily recgnised prfessinal bdy) 3.2 WHERE TO OBTAIN IPD The diverse nature f accuntancy wrk allws trainees t gain experience in industry, cmmerce, public practice and the public sectr. Yu may btain experience in mre than ne sectr; a variety f experience will benefit yur verall career. The rganisatin can be any size and the type f wrk may vary frm ne emplyer t anther, hwever yur emplyer shuld be able t ffer yu a varied training envirnment and access t guidance and supprt frm a prfessinally qualified accuntant. 3.3 WHEN TO BEGIN IPD IPD may be gained befre, during study fr, r n successful cmpletin f the AIA exams, r a cmbinatin f these, hwever AIA strngly recmmends that IPD is cmpleted alngside yur exams. All rutes must be cncluded within ten years f registratin as an AIA student. Assciatin f Internatinal Accuntants

9 3.4 WHAT CAN BE COUNTED AS IPD AIA accepts perids f six mnths r mre full-time emplyment as IPD. Part-time wrk experience will be assessed n its merits; if yu are pting fr part-time wrk yu shuld cntact AIA fr further guidance. In rder fr experience t cunt as IPD it must be fully dcumented, reviewed and certified by a prfessinally qualified accuntant. 3.5 PRIOR WORK EXPERIENCE AIA will accept up ne year prir wrk experience (wrk undertaken befre registratin as an AIA student) twards IPD. T be eligible fr cnsideratin as part f the three years IPD, prir wrk experience must have been gained in full time emplyment in the accuntancy prfessin, under apprpriate supervisin and must be apprpriately dcumented and certified by a prfessinally qualified accuntant. 3.6 WHO CAN CERTIFY PRIOR WORK EXPERIENCE? Ideally all prir wrk experience shuld already be certified by yur previus emplyer. If this is nt pssible yur current emplyer r supervisr can certify prir wrk experience as lng as they are satisfied with the evidence yu have prvided. There is n time limit n what experience can be cunted twards IPD, hwever yu shuld, alng with yur emplyer, cnsider carefully the apprpriateness and relevance f experience gained mre than five years previusly. 9 Assciatin f Internatinal Accuntants 2017

Examples f dcuments that culd supprt yur experience include: training recrds frm anther prfessinal bdy curriculum vitae supprted by references appraisal recrds certificates f training curses attended 4.0 PLANNING IPD Yu shuld meet with yur emplyer at the beginning f yur IPD training. Yur emplyer shuld recmmend an apprpriately qualified supervisr t versee and certify IPD in rder t ensure cnsistent and effective assessment f yur perfrmance in the wrkplace. Emplyers and Supervisrs shuld cntact ipd@aiawrldwide.cm fr a cpy f the IPD Guide fr Emplyers and Supervisrs, cntaining mre specific guidance. 4.1 DEVELOPING A TRAINING SCHEDULE When cmmencing yur IPD yu must meet with yur supervisr t discuss and prepare a training schedule. The schedule shuld take int cnsideratin the whle training perid, establishing training gals and an verall training timetable. The schedule shuld als include agreed dates fr six-mnthly review meetings and be used thrughut the IPD perid t plan activities and mnitr yur prgress. AIA may request access t yur recrd as part f the mnitring prcess. Assciatin f Internatinal Accuntants

11 4.2 DEVELOPING A TRAINING PLAN Fllwing establishment f the schedule yu shuld meet with yur supervisr t create and recrd a training plan. The initial plan shuld cver the first six mnths f training leading up t the first review meeting, be apprpriate fr the needs f yur emplyer and prepared in line with AIA s requirements. The three year IPD Training Plan shuld recgnise the need fr the trainee t demnstrate that they have: wrked at prgressive levels f respnsibility; achieved technical cmpetency in financial accunting, financial management, auditing, management accunting, taxatin and tax planning and Infrmatin Cmmunicatin Technlgy (ICT); and, are able t apply prfessinal skills, values and ethics in their wrk. Refer t Sectin 6.0 Skills and Cmpetencies fr further detailed guidance n hw t cver and demnstrate cmpetency in specific areas. Emplyers wh already have a training prgramme in place may use this as the basis f the IPD plan and shuld liaise with AIA if they require any assistance with develping the IPD training plan. Once the plan is agreed prgress shuld be regularly reviewed and future gals identified as part f the six-mnthly frmal review meetings. AIA recmmends that cpies f all training plans shuld frm a part f the trainee IPD prtfli f supprting evidence. 12 4.3 REVIEW MEETINGS Review meetings are an essential part f the IPD training. Yu shuld bring training plans and any ther additinal evidence f training undertaken r curses attended t yur meetings and reflect upn prgress with regards t technical cmpetency and develpment in prfessinal skills, values and ethics. 13 5.0 IPD RECORD AIA requires that yu keep a cntinuus and detailed recrd f IPD ver the three year training perid. Yu shuld write a summary f the experience yu have gained fr each cmpetency and emplyment psitin the IPD Recrd. A template f the IPD Recrd may be dwnladed frm the AIA website. The Recrd must be signed ff (certified) as a true and crrect descriptin f yur prgress and cmpetencies by a prfessinally qualified accuntant, usually yur current supervisr r emplyer. At the cmmencement f a new psitin either within the cmpany r with a new emplyer it is essential that yu ntify the AIA and recrd the details f the new psitin in the IPD Recrd. REMEMBER! Befre mving t a new emplyer yu must ensure yur supervisr cnfirms any IPD btained at yur prir wrkplace. Yur IPD Recrd shuld als include full details and dcumented utcmes f any prgress reviews and training curses in which yu have participated, tgether with any supprting evidence such as appraisal certificates r reprts. 14 REMEMBER! All frms and supprting evidence shuld be cmpleted in English 5.1 IPD ANNUAL DECLARATION All trainees are required t cmplete and submit an IPD Annual Declaratin, in Octber f each year. The declaratin cntains details f yur current emplyment and IPD and allws AIA t mnitr yur prgress and where necessary prvide further guidance and supprt. 5.2 PROGRESSIVE LEVELS OF RESPONSIBILITY Initially yu will wrk under clse supervisin, prgress t wrking independently, and eventually may be respnsible fr supervising the wrk f thers. WORKING UNDER SUPERVISION Early IPD training requires yu t wrk within a supervised envirnment demnstrating the ability t carry ut instructins, take cntrl f specific tasks and perfrm within the perating structure f the rganisatin. Wrking under supervisin, yu shuld: wrk effectively and accrding t instructins make gd use f the infrmatin and cmmunicatin technlgy available t cllect and categrise relevant infrmatin display a degree f practical understanding and knwledge apprpriate fr the psitin yu hld, raise queries and frmulate questins t address any gaps in knwledge Assciatin f Internatinal Accuntants

15 demnstrate an awareness f significant external factrs such as the verall business envirnment, standards, rules and regulatry issues effectively manage yurself and all areas f respnsibility assigned t yu, adhere t established reprting lines and standards at all times utilise wrk experience t cntribute t the imprvement f departmental perfrmance WORKING INDEPENDENTLY Yu shuld prgress t wrking independently with a minimum f supervisin, demnstrating initiative in the applicatin f advanced knwledge and the ability t effectively manage wrklads and make infrmed prfessinal decisins and recmmendatins. Wrking independently, yu shuld demnstrate that yu can: wrk effectively in unfamiliar situatins display an advanced practical understanding and cmprehensive knwledge f all aspects f any task and be able t develp and implement slutins t cmplex prblems apply highly develped interpretive and evaluative skills t the cllectin f infrmatin and the preparatin f internal and external reprts; subsequent recmmendatins shuld incrprate advice n the effect any regulatry issues may have n prpsed bjectives and demnstrate the applicatin f ethical sensitivity and judgement demnstrate an ability t effectively manage budgets, cntribute t budget planning and prduce frecasts and prjectins 15 Assciatin f Internatinal Accuntants 2017

17 6.0 SKILLS AND COMPETENCIES 6.1 TECHNICAL COMPETENCY IPD shuld illustrate the gaining f experience and technical cmpetency in the main subject areas f financial accunting, financial management, auditing, management accunting, taxatin and tax planning and Infrmatin Cmmunicatin Technlgy (ICT). 20 6.2 PROFESSIONAL CONDUCT It is essential that prfessinal accuntants adhere t the highest standards f prfessinal cnduct when carrying ut their day-t-day duties and when develping prfessinal relatinships. Accuntants shuld act with prfessinal cmpetence and due care t ensure that the services they prvide are in accrdance with accepted best practice and the manner in which they deal with clients and ther prfessinal service prviders is beynd reprach. Internatinal Accuntants and trainees shuld als act in line with the AIA Cde f Ethics. Thrughut their IPD training, trainees shuld demnstrate hw they have develped their prficiencies in these aspects whilst adhering t high standards f prfessinal cnduct at all times. The specific aspects f prfessinal cnduct where cmpetence shuld be demnstrated are itemised in the fllwing sectin. 22 6.3 PROFESSIONAL SKILLS IPD is mre than simply gaining experience in technical cmpetencies and prfessinal cnduct and shuld illustrate the prfessinal skills yu can demnstrate fllwing yur training. Whilst yu require technical skills t undertake accunting rles, the expanded business rle f many f tday s accuntants means that yu will require a range f prfessinal skills in additin. The specific prfessinal skills where cmpetence shuld be demnstrated are itemised in the fllwing table. 25 7.0 IPD AT A GLANCE 7.1 COMPLETING IPD Trainee prfessinal accuntants are respnsible fr managing their wn career develpment. Yu shuld begin wrking twards cmpleting the exams and IPD as sn as yur registratin prcess is cmplete. Trainees are strngly advised t fllw the advice prvided in this guide and the steps listed here in rder t successfully cmplete their IPD. SECURE APPROPRIATE EMPLOYMENT Yu shuld be in full-time emplyment within the accuntancy prfessin with an emplyer wh is supprtive f training and able t ffer a varied training envirnment. Trainees are respnsible fr prviding emplyers with a cpy f this guide and t ascertain emplyer willingness and ability t prvide training. APPOINT A QUALIFIED SUPERVISOR IPD must be carried ut under the bservatin f a supervisr wh is appinted by yur emplyer. Yur supervisr shuld be a prfessinally qualified accuntant willing t cmmit t regular meetings thrughut the IPD perid and be prepared t assess and certify IPD. AIA may cntact a supervisr fr further infrmatin if necessary during the IPD prcess. DEVELOP AN IPD TRAINING SCHEDULE & PLAN Fr IPD t be effective it is essential that yu wrk tgether with yur emplyer, supervisr and AIA thrughut the training perid. Yu shuld arrange an initial meeting with yur supervisr t agree a training schedule and plan. Assciatin f Internatinal Accuntants

26 The schedule shuld encmpass the whle training perid and include gals, a training timetable and agreed dates fr review meetings, preferably at six mnthly intervals. Previusly established training prgrammes can be adapted t accmmdate AIA IPD Requirements as lng as the needs f yur emplyer cntinue t be met. The training plan cvers the first six mnths f training leading up t the first review meeting after this the plan is reviewed and develped fr the next six mnths. Please cntact AIA fr further guidance if required. IPD RECORDS Yu must submit an AIA IPD Recrd fr each year f yur training. They shuld recrd details accurately and in a timely manner. Entries shuld be made in English and shuld include the date f the wrk carried ut and the type f task invlved. Entries shuld cver all aspects f IPD. Yu shuld agree the type f evidence t be recrded with yur supervisr. 7.2 SUPPORTING INFORMATION IPD EVIDENCE Yu shuld always be aware that trainees are required t keep a prtfli (cllectin) f supprting evidence which AIA may request as part f the final IPD review. This evidence must be kept until the applicatin prcess fr Assciate Membership has been cmpleted. Assciatin f Internatinal Accuntants

28 7.3 REVIEW MEETINGS AND SIGNING OFF YOUR IPD Yu shuld take yur training plan and any ther additinal evidence f training undertaken r curses attended t each review meeting. It is imprtant that trainees reflect upn their prgress with regard t the cmpetencies and requirements set ut in this guide: technical develpment, prfessinal cnduct and develpment in prfessinal skills, values and ethics. During each review meeting the supervisr shuld prvide yu with feedback n yur IPD prgress, agree training gals fr the next six mnth perid and certify any cmpleted IPD Wrk Experience Prfiles. REMEMBER! It is yur respnsibility t ensure that meaningful reviews take place with yur supervisr and AIA recmmends that these take place at least every six mnths. If yur rganisatin carries ut regular perfrmance reviews these culd be cmbined with yur IPD reviews. 8.0 APPLY FOR ASSOCIATE MEMBERSHIP Trainees are eligible t apply fr Assciate membership when the fllwing criteria have been met: successful cmpletin f AIA exams minimum three years practical wrk experience current emplyment in the accuntancy prfessin Assciatin f Internatinal Accuntants

29 8.1 IPD ANNUAL DECLARATION Graduates wh have passed the AIA exams but have nt btained the required wrk experience shuld cmplete and submit an IPD Annual Declaratin frm annually until the requisite three years experience is accrued. AIA cntacts graduates each year t request submissin f the declaratin. REMEMBER! 30 9.0 CHECKLIST FOR NEW TRAINEES Fllw this checklist t ensure yu cmplete all requirements fr yur Initial Prfessinal Develpment Read all the infrmatin available in this guide and the AIA website relating t IPD; ipd@aiawrldwide.cm with any queries. Arrange fr a suitably qualified persn t act as yur supervisr thrughut yur training. Submit yur cmpleted IPD Registratin fr Training Offices frm t AIA. Meet with yur supervisr t agree yur training plan fr the first six mnth perid. Draw up a list f the type f evidence fr yur prtfli suitable fr yur emplyment circumstances. Arrange six-mnthly reviews with yur supervisr. Keep cpies f any dcuments relating t yur training in yur prtfli f supprting evidence until yur applicatin fr Assciate membership has been apprved by AIA. Cmplete yur IPD Recrd thrughut yur training using a different prfile fr each year, making sure that they are certified by the apprpriate supervisr. When yu have successfully cmpleted the AIA exams and yur three years IPD, apply fr full AIA Assciate membership, submitting yur cmpleted IPD Recrds with the applicatin. 31 10.0 FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS IPD GUIDE I have just registered as an AIA student but am nt wrking at the mment, what shuld I d? AIA strngly recmmends that IPD is cmpleted alngside the exams r shrtly after their cmpletin. If yu are nt in emplyment when yu apply fr student registratin yu shuld pursue emplyment in an apprpriate field and infrm AIA as sn as yu secure full-time emplyment within the accuntancy prfessin. Can I use wrk experience gained befre I registered as an AIA student? AIA will accept up t ne year prir wrk experience (wrk undertaken befre registratin as an AIA student) twards yur IPD. T be eligible fr cnsideratin as part f yur three years IPD, prir wrk experience must have been gained in full time emplyment in the accuntancy prfessin under apprpriate supervisin and must be apprpriately dcumented and certified by a prfessinally qualified accuntant. Hw many hurs d I need t wrk fr my emplyment t be cunted as full-time? Full-time wrk is defined as mre than 35 hurs per week. Will AIA cunt any part-time wrk as IPD? I wrk in a specialist area; can I use this experience twards gaining my three years IPD? IPD may be acquired in a specialist area (e.g. crprate finance, internal audit) prvided it is relevant and apprpriately supervised. Will AIA accept lecturing as part f my IPD? AIA will accept lecturing prvided it is at the equivalent level f the AIA Fundatin level exams and abve (i.e. cmparable t the first year f a UK degree). A maximum f 12 mnths lecturing experience will cunt twards the qualifying perid. I am self-emplyed; will my wrk cunt twards my IPD? AIA will nly recgnise apprpriately supervised accunting experience as cntributing t yur IPD, hwever, sme supervised sub-cntract wrk may be acceptable. Please cntact AIA directly fr further advice. Yur supervisr shuld be a prfessinally qualified accuntant. Where pssible they shuld be yur direct supervisr within yur rganisatin. Can my emplyer als be my supervisr? Yes, yur emplyer can als be yur supervisr prvided that they meet the requirements f being a prfessinally qualified accuntant and that they are able t allcate apprpriate time t meet the requirements f bth supervisr and emplyer. 34 11.0 GLOSSARY TERM DEFINITION Supervisr An emplyee f the rganisatin prviding IPD training. This persn will be a prfessinally qualified accuntant and ideally able t directly supervise the trainee. IPD Annual declaratin A frm that must be cmpeted and submitted t AIA in Octber f each year. All AIA students and graduates are required t submit IPD Annual Declaratins. IPD requirements Criteria that must be satisfied in rder fr the trainee s IPD t be verified and apprved. Prfessinally qualified accuntant An Internatinal Accuntant (AAIA/FAIA), a member f an IFAC member bdy r a member f a statutrily recgnised prfessinal bdy. IPD Recrd A signed recrd f the trainee s IPD which is submitted t AIA n cmpletin f the training perid. A separate IPD Recrd shuld be used fr each emplyer and emplyment psitin. 35 IPD training schedule Dcumented training prcess created at the beginning f the IPD perid and used as a framewrk by trainees and supervisrs t plan trainees wrk and ensure adequate cverage f all aspects f training. AIA may ask t review this dcument at any time during the IPD training perid. IPD training plan A plan cvering a six mnth perid f training leading up t the review meeting. The plan shuld be realistic and must be prepared in line with the IPD requirements tgether with the needs f the emplyer. AIA may ask t review this dcument at any time during the IPD training perid. Prtfli f supprting evidence A cllectin f supprting evidence relating t training undertaken. All IPD dcuments (training schedule, training plan, IPD Recrd and IPD Wrk Experience Prfiles) tgether with details r certificates relating t any additinal training r curses shuld be included in the prtfli. AIA may ask t review the prtfli when reviewing IPD. IPD evidence A persnal recrd f IPD achievement kept by each trainee. The evidence shuld be updated regularly (i.e. daily r weekly) and brught t review meetings as supprting evidence f experience attained. The evidence must be cmpleted in English.
