1 One Dance UK Head of Children & Young People s Dance Job Description Introduction One Dance UK is the national support organisation for dance. We are part of Arts Council England s National Portfolio as the only Sector Support Organisation specifically focusing on dance. We are also the Subject Association for dance in schools. We advocate for and champion the value of dance as a vibrant and diverse artform across a multitude of sectors including education, health, physical activity and as a cultural form of expression. We support those who work in dance through partnership building and direct intervention to: Improve the skills and knowledge of those that teach dance through our role as Subject Association for dance in schools Develop dance artists to be well connected and perform to the best of their ability Diversify the range of dance forms showcased and developed Equip dance organisations with the knowledge and networks that allows the dance sector to flourish. We create opportunities through pioneering advancements in dancers health; profiling artists of the African Diaspora and leading on national programmes to develop and champion young people's dance. Our work is nationally renowned and inclusive for participants across the country. Overview of the role The Head of Children & Young People s Dance (Head of CYP Dance) is a pivotal role within the Senior Management Team, leading on the strategic delivery of One Dance UK s programmes with and for children, young people and teachers; whilst harnessing communication and advocacy skills to champion the value of dance across a range of fora including government round-tables, conferences and in the media. The right candidate for this role will have a strong, up-to-date understanding of the landscape for CYP dance; including government policy and its effects in how dance is taught and supported both within and outside of school. The postholder will have substantial experience in project and event management, ideally at a regional or national level and a demonstrable experience of forming and developing sustainable partnerships with a range of stakeholders across the UK and beyond. The Head of CYP Dance represents the organisation at regular Council for Subject Associations and Programme Board (CYP Dance) meetings and is an advisor on matters relating to dance education for the Cultural Learning Alliance. 2 The postholder manages a small team who are responsible for the delivery of: the national U.Dance Festival, Dance Ambassadors programme, Young Creatives, teacher networks, CPD and resource development. Therefore, the chosen candidate will need to be a skilled manager of people who have demanding and wide-ranging workloads. The Head of CYP Dance also plays an instrumental role in developing the take-up of teacher and school membership of One Dance UK, creating a strong membership base to inform and support the work of One Dance UK. As a member of the Senior Management Team, the Head of CYP Dance plays a key role in strategic decision making and the implementation of essential operational aspects of One Dance UK s work, for example Safeguarding and Child Performance Licencing. They are actively involved in fundraising for their areas of work and therefore need to be confident in articulating what the needs are and how a funder s support could have measurable impact. Working Location The One Dance UK team is currently based in South London, however due to a successful bid to Arts Council England, the organisation is part of the National Portfolio as the only Sector Support Organisation for dance. As part of this funding agreement, One Dance UK will be moving its headquarters to Birmingham City Centre. As such, the person taking this role would be based in Birmingham, using a hot desk at DanceXchange, with regular trips to London and around the country to ensure good communication with colleagues, members and stakeholders. The Dance in Education Manager is already Birmingham based, working from DanceXchange. Alternatively, anyone taking the post and being based in the London office, could have a fixed term contract or a permanent contract. This would be determined at offer stage. Should they be offered a permanent contract they would be (subject to successfully completing their probationary period) given the opportunity to move with the organisation to Birmingham, as ultimately this role will be Birmingham based. The move is currently expected to take place in/around July Job Profile Responsible to: The Chief Executive Responsible for: Dance in Education Manager, U.Dance Festival Manager Salary: 35,000-40,000 per annum Key Relationships (Internal): Heads of Department, Office and Membership Manager and Administrator, Finance Director, partners and freelance consultants and project managers Key Relationships (External): Dance companies, organisations, industry bodies, One Dance UK s members, Teachers, Teaching Unions, Bridge Organisations Holiday Entitlement: 25 days per annum plus Bank Holidays Page 2 of 6

3 Hours: 35 hours per week (flexible between 8am to 6pm) plus 1 hour daily unpaid break. Some evening and weekend work is required. Time Off In-Lieu (TOIL) is provided when evenings or weekends are worked. Base: Currently at One Dance UK at Ensign House, Battersea Reach, Juniper Drive, London SW18 1TA, or a hot-desk space in Birmingham. From summer 2019 in central Birmingham. Some travel around the country is required. Notice period: Three months (after completion of probationary period) Probationary period: Three months Additional Requirements: In line with our Safeguarding Policy, and as this role will come into contact with children and young people, the successful candidate will be required to have an Enhanced DBS Check as part of their induction process. Roles and responsibilities Oversight and Delivery of One Dance UK s CYP Programmes and Events Line manage the Festival Manager, Dance in Education Manager and other employed or freelance staff as required for CYP areas of work Lead on the development of future U.Dance national festivals, forming partnerships with venues and other national and regional stakeholders Lead on the development of the Dance Ambassador and Young Creatives programmes, maintaining existing partnerships and cultivating new ones as necessary Ensuring all CYP projects and events are delivered to a high standard, on time and within budget Oversight and Delivery of One Dance UK s work as the Subject Association for dance in schools Represent One Dance UK in all communication with the Council for Subject Associations (CfSA) and during meetings of the CfSA Be the primary advocate for dance education, through public speaking, thought leadership and the active pursuit of opportunities to influence policy and practice to benefit CYP dance Page 3 of 6

4 Oversee the development of resources for dance teachers in schools, to be provided as member benefits, on CPD courses and in One Dance UK publications, both online and in print Prepare the business case and implementation plans for the teachers CPD programme, including the development of new online training programmes Source and assimilate collected data and information relating to dance education and wider arts education for advocacy campaigns and general use by the organisation and our partners Contribute to and sign-off the monthly Dance in Education Briefing Provide advice on dance education policy and practice to the wider dance sector; as well as to the health, sports and wider cultural education sectors Oversee the coordination the new Teacher Advisory Groups being set up as a means of effectively consulting with in-service teachers at both primary and secondary level Help increase the teacher and school membership of One Dance UK by developing new strategies for engaging teachers and our membership offer Cultivate and sustain teacher/educational members by delivering membership talks at universities, colleges and teacher networking events/teachmeets Maintain and develop relationships with schools, colleges, universities and conservatoires. Informing and Delivering aspects of One Dance UK s wider work As a member of the Senior Management Team, contribute to the development and implementation of One Dance UK s business plan Lead on the sourcing and programming of content which is targeted towards those working in dance education and participation for the annual One Dance UK Conference Lead on the development of the One Dance UK Awards relating to education and participation Advise on and make contact with suitable Award s panel members who have the knowledge and expertise to assess nominations for the education and participation One Dance UK Awards Work with other Senior Management Team colleagues to plan One Dance UK s programmes of work. Other responsibilities Make presentations at One Dance UK talks, seminars, conferences and other events as required Commission reports both internally and externally as required and implement monitoring and evaluation of CYP programmes Work with the Development Team to identify sources of support for dance in education work and input into funding applications as required Build links with relevant organisations such as Bridge organisations, dance venues and agencies and local authorities Be aware of, and actively implement, the organisation s policies including those for Equal Opportunities, Safeguarding, Diversity, Health and Safety and Environment Ensure all aspects of the dance in education programme operate in compliance with General Data Protection Regulations and appropriate use of and permissions for images Attend and support regular evening and occasional weekend events which form part of One Dance UK s work Attend staff meetings and training sessions as required Undertake any other duties commensurate with the post as directed by the Chief Executive. 5 Person Specification Essential knowledge, experience and skills A strong understanding of how dance is taught and where it sits within formal education, including the governance structures of schools A strong understating of the informal dance education and participation sector Extensive experience of working with schools, ideally in an arts context A thorough understanding of the pressures and challenges faced by schools and the ability to articulate how One Dance UK could support them Experience of line-managing staff Proven ability to manage large budgets accurately, reporting ongoing updates to Senior Managers and Board Excellent written and verbal communications skills, including experience of public speaking Proven ability to build and maintain good working partnerships with arts and/or education organisations A pro-active approach to work, where using expertise and initiative is encouraged Experience of managing relationships with external collaborators and advisors, for the purpose of garnering support and advice A flexible approach and ability to work collaboratively as part of a team The ability to work independently and effectively prioritise own workload Availability to work some evenings and weekends as required including occasional overnight stays away from home A good understanding of Artsmark A good understanding of safeguarding practice and equal opportunities Where we will assess these criteria Desirable knowledge, experience and skills We would expect those invited to to have at least three of the following.
