2 Description Connect V4.2.0 and V4.2.1 are products designed to enable community integration through connectivity between trading partners, whatever the B2B requirement of the partner, and whatever the preferred style of integration and connectivity. It is delivered to enable effective operational B2B based on communities of trading partners. Connect provides the connectivity needed to integrate these communities of trading partners. It will work with other components of an end-to-end solution, typically provided by other middleware products, such as WebSphere Business Integration Server, which provide functions such as transformation and process integration. At present, operational B2B is not capable of achieving critical mass in a cost-effective, scalable manner. In most cases, a community must quickly grow to a point at which its participants give and get optimal levels of business value. To achieve critical mass, and for all community participants to gain high returns from their community, the process of recognizing, integrating, and supporting partners has to be rapid, rigorous, and repeatable. This has not been the case with B2B implementations to date. Connect is designed to enable effective B2B which is not dependent on a number of rigid point-to-point connections, but instead allows high levels of interoperability between whatever number of partners is required to achieve critical mass (community integration). This interoperability will allow for highly visible dynamic and fluid connectivity between a community of trading partners as opposed to the opaque, limited connections of the past. Community integration involves the selection of a transport mechanism, such as HTTP(S), FTP or SMTP, and the selection of the appropriate data format, whether it be a generic data format such as XML or SOAP, or whether it be related to a particular industry standard such as AS2 (an EDI standard for use over internet HTTP(S) transports) or RosettaNet. RosettaNet is a standard, common in the electronics industry using a specific form of XML messages as part of defined business processes shared between partners, again used over internet HTTP(S) transports. WebSphere Business provides support for these standards as well as others. Interactions with trading partners are mostly driven by the need to make internal business processes more efficient. Extending internal business integration to include interaction with trading partners creates an end-to-end integrated solution. Incorporating a trading partner interaction into an end-to-end integration solution necessitates the use of a B2B component within the internal integration implementation. This B2B component needs to extend the internal integration solution to provide the extra functions and capabilities required when exchanging information with a trading partner in an integrated and legally auditable way. The internal integration components will generally be the interface between the applications of the enterprise and the B2B component, although other methods of integration could include file-based integration. Whatever the style of internal integration used, the use of a B2B component, such as Connect working with internal applications, creates an end-to-end B2B solution. When looking to interact with another trading partner, an enterprise must agree on a number of different aspects of the level of integration to use. At the highest level, the enterprises must decide whether they are simply looking to exchange data to meet the B2B integration needs of their enterprises, or whether they want to extend their internal processes, and share them, as the interface between the enterprises. This would require each side to be running a process engine capable of driving the partner interactions through the defined process steps that are known to both partners. These steps are quite separate in definition and external awareness to the steps involved in the internal business processes, which would generally be private and proprietary to an enterprise. WebSphere Business does not provide this process engine because it is purely a B2B gateway, but can drive, and be driven by, a suitable process engine such as WebSphere InterChange Server. Also important to an end-to-end B2B solution is the transformation of the data exchanged between partners. Different enterprises have different practices around the transformation of data. Some will want the integration infrastructure to normalize all data to a standardized format, with the data then being transformed as required. Others will just transform data between applications as needed. The data standards used by a trading partner are likely to be substantially different to the data formats and standards used within an enterprise. Even if a data format to be used in trading partner interactions is agreed to, at least one party in the exchange is likely to need to transform the data. The most common implementation scenario will see a B2B gateway like Connect being used as part of an integration infrastructure, which is likely to already include various data transformation options. Examples of these are products such as WebSphere Data Interchange and Server. WebSphere Business can interact directly with these products to transform data as required, or it can also invoke other less powerful transformation products such as an XSLT tool to transform XML messages. However, on its own, Connect is capable of certain data validation and transformation functions. These enable the product to validate that the data received by a partner is correct and well formed, and any invalid data can be rejected by the product without further processing. Any validated messages can then be sent deeper within the enterprise. An end-to-end B2B solution requires the communication, connectivity, and security functions of a B2B gateway. This is the capability that WebSphere Business provides. Essentially, it drives the communication aspect of the exchange of data between trading partners. This includes the definition of the partners, which will include the specific transport layer to be used for each connection, as well as the security, encryption, and auditing requirements. Additionally, the activities need to be monitored as part of a solution management function while the partner definition function needs a management component in order to add, delete, and modify partner definitions. In addition to needing an effective software solution to deliver operational B2B, a methodology by which to facilitate critical mass in a community is required. This methodology needs to be rapid, rigorous, and repeatable. It will enable the assessment and planning required to identify and incorporate a trading partner into a community. The methodology will also provide some level of operational support for the maintenance of the integrated community. Connect is available in conjunction with such a methodology that will guide enterprises interested in extended community integration through the process of:
3 Identifying trading partners who want a mutually beneficial trading relationship Preparing those partners for participation in an integrated community Supporting the participants in their various roles in the community Connect provides all the functions as described above. In order to meet the needs of the differing customers we will be providing three different editions, which share a lot of common functions and whose packaging provides better tailoring for specific types of solutions. These editions are as follows: Connect-Express This product is designed to meet the needs of the SMB market, in terms of function, usability, and price. It enables small enterprises, who will make minimal gains from day to day interaction with upstream partners, to become involved in B2B communities at times when their potential gains are greatest. WebSphere Business -Express customers will want to integrate with a very small number of partners as quickly and as simply as possible. They do not wish to integrate with a growing number of partners, nor do they wish to build a hub of their own, where a number of different partners can quickly and automatically connect to them in order to start trading electronically. As such, this customer is likely to be an opportunist or reluctant to participate in a community on a large scale basis but Connect-Express will give them the ability to quickly, easily, and cheaply satisfy customer requirements and continue their trading relationship. This product is designed to meet the needs of the SMB market, in terms of function, usability, and price. A standard per CPU price provides a connection to a limited number of trading partner instances. The product is quick and easy to install, with the ability to exchange documents with trading partners using the following data format standards: X12, EDIFACT, Binary, and custom XML using a transport layer of AS2 providing any of the above data formats have been wrapped in an AS2 header before transmission. This product is priced both per CPU and also by the number of trading partner connections defined. The product is quick and easy to install, with an adaptable file based-interface for flexible and effortless back end integration. Connect also has the ability to send and resend documents to trading partners using the following data format standards: X12, EDIFACT, Binary, and custom XML using an AS2 transport layer providing any of the above data formats have been wrapped in an AS2 header before transmission. Connect-Express is available on Linux and Microsoft Windows. This product is aimed at the customer who wants to integrate with a very small number of partners as quickly and as simply as possible. They do not wish to integrate with a growing number of partners, nor do they wish to build a hub of their own, where a number of different partners can quickly and automatically connect to them and start trading electronically. The most likely scenario for this customer is the mandated need to connect to a large and important trading partner. As such, this customer is likely to be an opportunist or reluctant to participate in a community on a permanent basis. Connect Advanced Connect Advanced is a more powerful and complete product than the Express edition, designed for the customer who sees the need to connect to a growing number of trading partners, with a potentially high number of trading partner connections or a large number of transactions. Their role in the community will be highly changeable and they will require complete visibility of the reasons for change. They will adapt and reposition themselves in a given community in order to derive the most possible value. This may involve building a hub to which partners can automatically self-register. This product will provide functions and an environment that is scalable and robust with the necessary management and integration tools appropriate for a key B2B gateway, functioning as a critical part of the enterprise end-to-end integration solution extending out to trading partners. In addition to the scalability and management functions provided, Connect Advanced provides a full range of connectivity options. The transport options supported for connections between partners are SMTP, FTP, HTTP, HTTPS. The data formats supported for transmission across these transport options are: RNIF 1.1, RNIF 2.0 of RosettaNet, X12 and EDIFACT (both AS1 and AS2), custom XML, and Binary files. This product is priced both per CPU (defined by the number of CPUs where the document management component is installed) and also by the number of trading partner connections defined. Connect Enterprise Connect Enterprise is the same product as the Advanced but with an unlimited number of trading partner connections. This product is ideal for the very large enterprise that is building a hub where any number of partner connections may be required, and indeed these partners may register themselves to the hub in response to a mandate or instruction from the community owner. The pricing is simply based on the number of CPUs (defined by the number of CPUs where the document management component is installed) in the installed server. Connect delivers industry-specific business process templates and integration capabilities to connect disparate applications so they can make business decisions based upon a single, accurate view of their data, including critical item and inventory information. This extension of the current offering supplies functionality and adherence within the RosettaNet Standards. RosettaNet is an independent, non-profit consortium dedicated to the collaborative development and rapid deployment of open Internet-based business standards that align processes within the global high-technology trading network. RosettaNet is the accepted supply-chain integration standard and solution for the high-tech industry and other manufacturing sectors, addressing the demands for a non-proprietary solution for standardizing business with customers and partners. Connect, having the capability to provide a solution for RosettaNet, will be positioned as a key element that extends the WebSphere platform through new functionality that supports the industry standard. The target customer for a WebSphere Business solution is typically facing B2B transaction problems which fall into the process integration category:
4 Conducts inter-enterprise and intra-industry transactions with suppliers, plants, and customers utilizing the RosettaNet environment. Achieving a consistent and unified view of information across the enterprise, across disparate systems and applications to aid in reporting, planning, and business analysis.
