Edmonton Catholic Schools requires a Fitness Instructor to participate in the development of the curriculum around fitness and wellness related activities reflecting the goals of longterm student athlete skill development. The job builds, modifies and delivers formative assessment drills and exercises to enhance student skill level. The primary focus is to provide instruction on functional and sport specific training for the sport academies, physical education classes and the training and conditioning portion of the Career and Technology Studies modules. The job also provides nutrition expertise to all academies, physical education classes and athletic teams. The job assists in the recruitment of students and off-site promotion of the program to support sustainability and growth. This is a permanent, full-time, 10 months/year, Level 3, Out of Scope position with a salary range of $46, $58, to commence as soon as possible. Primary Responsibilities: Research, identify and implement programs based on current fitness trends; Plan programs consistent with the current and future needs of student development; Present information in a manner that is understandable and appropriate for student participation and success; Create written evaluations of students based on daily training and observations; Participate in interviews with students and parents; Maintain technical knowledge and certifications through a range of professional development activities. Qualifications: Degree in an area related to Physical Education, Kinesiology, Human Kinetics or related is preferred, plus three years of directly related experience; Certified Exercise Physiologist (CSEP-CEP); Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (NSCA-CSCS); Weightlifting certification (NCCP or Eleiko Strength Coach Level 1) Strongly preferred; Member of the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA); Certification in First Aid, CPR and Automated external defibrillator is mandatory; Knowledge of various coaching and instructional methods and styles as appropriate to the needs of students; Understanding of the physical and physiological demands sports to devise specific training and conditioning programs; Strong written and oral communication skills with the ability to build and maintain a network of contacts; Ability to build and maintain relationships with students, staff and other stakeholders; Must be a Canadian citizen or Permanent Resident. The job s primary responsibility is to participate in the development of the curriculum around fitness and wellness related activities reflecting the goals of long-term student athlete skill development. The job builds, modifies and delivers formative assessment drills and exercises to enhance student skill level. Fitness activities Build and modify exercises as building blocks Plan programs consistent with the current and future needs of student development Present information in a manner that is understandable and appropriate for student participation and success Provide immediate and instantaneous feedback for student Lead, maintain and supervise the weight room daily: before school, at lunch, and after school. Research, identify and implement programs based on current fitness trends Lead and train athletic teams including conditioning and injury management Ensure proper maintenance of equipment is done on a regular basis Ensure fitness related items and replacement of existing exercise equipment is purchased in consultation with supervisor 2. Assessment activities Create written evaluations of students based on daily training and observations Develop, maintain and update daily progress reports Tabulate and configure performance testing Perform concussion baseline testing. Generate regular assessments on each student Provide positive and constructive evaluations that accurately reflects the student s progress Maintain records of testing and scoring results Rank students based on obtained results included in evaluations and used for year-end results 3. Performance interviews Participate in interviews with students and parents Meet with students to discuss evaluations and provide feedback on a regular basis Revised May

Meet with parents and students to discuss improvements Provide information on current student status, class performance and behaviour 4. School support activities Monitor, maintain and distribute first aid kits Monthly checks on the Automated external defibrillator (AED) machine Work with football and rugby teams in first aid support capacity Participate in special events and celebrations Assist co-workers during absences and to handle peak workloads 5. Records management Record attendance for academy activities Maintain log for school and program records 6. Maintain technical knowledge and certifications through a range of professional development activities PROBLEM SOLVING: Describe difficult or challenging situations the position is typically expected to solve; the degree of originality of the solutions; assistance available; and any problems or decisions that must be referred to a supervisor for resolution or approval The job is required to design and arrange activities in a safe and efficient manner with strategy involved to work with academy students. The incumbent identifies injuries and provides quick remedies. When an injury is beyond the incumbent s skill-level the department head is notified. The incumbent determine which coaching methodologies to adapt to individual student s needs, capabilities and fitness levels. On a daily basis, feedback is provided, and the supervisor is updated on the status of the students. In situations when problems arise, the supervisor is informed and consulted, and together come up with an appropriate plan of action and enforce proper consequences and strategies. ORGANIZATIONAL DATA: Identify any measurable areas upon which the job has either direct or indirect impact. Measures that may be included are: number of staff supervised, annual operating budget, number and size of projects, clients served or any other significant values. Include examples that indicate the size of the job. Attach a complete Organizational Chart that includes supervisor, peers, direct reports and staff. The job works with football, rugby and as a full-time trainer while in season. The incumbent also provides nutrition expertise to all academies, physical education classes and athletic teams. The job provides personal training programs for the school s students. Leadership, determination and motivation are goals that are established within the school growth plan and align with those of the incumbent.
