1 Edmonton Catholic Schools is now accepting applications for the position of ELECTRONICS TECHNICIAN (Two New Positions) Edmonton Catholic Schools is a large urban school district whose mission is to provide a Catholic education that inspires students to learn and that prepares them to live fully and to serve God in one another. The District is comprised of over 39,000 students and 3,500 employees in 89 schools and sites. The Department of Facilities Services requires two (2) Electronics Technicians. This is technical maintenance and repair work of moderate to extreme complexity on a vast variety of electronic equipment and systems. They must show considerable expertise, good working knowledge, and a complete understanding of the overall activities involved. The work is done with minimal supervision. Employees must make sound decisions based on established procedures. Good relationships with coworkers and other departments must be maintained. The work is carried out using hand tools and various sophisticated test equipment. These are permanent, full time (40 hrs. /week) positions to commence as soon as possible. Salary is $ per month (gross) as per current AUPE Collective Agreement. Primary Duties and Responsibilities: Install, inspect, troubleshoot, service, repair and maintain many different brands of the following types of electronic equipment in the system: clock systems, closed circuit TV systems, microprocessors, language labs, projection equipment, security systems, sound systems, telephones, telephone systems and video equipment; Decide where repairs are most efficiently done and transport equipment as necessary; Purchase parts and supplies from dealers as directed; Other duties assigned by the Supervisor. Qualifications: Grade 12 education; Must be currently employed in the trade and in possession of a valid qualification as a Journeyman, Electronic/Communication Technician or a graduate in electronics from a technical institute; Several years recently related experience with proven troubleshooting techniques and the ability to work with minimal service information; Ability to prepare technical reports related to the equipment serviced; Ability to identify the level of repair required and make decisions as to the most efficient means of repair; Ability to work without direct supervision; Ability to relate well with other tradesmen, school principals, teachers and other staff; Possession of a complete set of trade related hand tools related to the repair of the equipment; Good communication skills and fluency in the English language both verbal and written is mandatory; Valid driver's license with a clean abstract; Ability to handle the physical demands of the job using appropriate lifting tools and techniques (Constantly lifting up to 30 kilograms). Job Description Working Title: Electronic Technician Requested Classification: Supervisor s Working Title: Electronics Supervisor Department/Program: Facilities Services/ Services JOB PURPOSE: Give a brief summary of the job, covering the main responsibilities, the framework within which the job has to operate and the main contribution to the organization. The job coordinates district electronics systems projects, including planning, diagramming, scheduling, on-site inspection, facilitating and coordinating with project participants. The main focus of the job is to manage requests from district sites pertaining to electronic maintenance projects, or modernization projects, from start to completion. The job is also responsible for documenting electronic systems, projects and assisting with the installation and maintenance of electronic systems as required. The job works as part of various teams in completing projects and activities. The job also supports department staff to handle peak workloads or large projects. JOB RESPONSIBILITIES AND ACTIVITIES: Normally a job has four to eight core responsibilities, each of which shows what the job is accountable for, within what framework, and what the added value is. List the core responsibilities in ascending order of importance. 1. Install, inspect, troubleshoot, service, repair and maintain a wide-range of electronic equipment. 2. Determine where repairs are required and the most efficient method to complete the work. Purchase parts and supplies from dealers as directed. 3. Handle inventory control including purchasing, receiving, shipping and categorizing supplies, materials and equipment 4. Identify problems through on-site inspections and report to supervisor, may determine alternatives for corrective action and present recommendations to supervisor for resolution. 5. Participate as a member of a project planning and design team, utilize independent judgment and input from team members to develop plans and resources. 6. Assist in development of preventive maintenance program and assess existing electronic system for modernization. 7. Assist department staff on a variety of projects and provide cover-off during absences 8. Assist in clean-up of work sites 9. Ensure worksites are clean and maintained within safety standards 10. Several years recent related experience with proven troubleshooting techniques and the ability to work with minimal service information Knowledge of wire and electronic systems installation and repairs General understanding of basic construction and maintenance techniques Knowledge of the safe use of power and manual tools and equipment Knowledge of Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Legislation and regulations including working in confined work spaces Knowledge of regulations governing Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS) Knowledge of Microsoft programs including Outlook and Internet Explorer Understanding of department and unit policies procedures, business and operations Abilities and Skills Ability to relate well with other trades, principals, teachers and general public. Good written and oral communication skills Ability to prepare technical reports related to the equipment serviced. Good organizational skills and the ability to manage several projects Strong problem solving and analytical skills Ability to handle to work in a physically demanding environment Good teamwork skills with the ability to work independently and as part of a team A valid class 5 driver s license and the ability to travel to various sites within Edmonton. Since there is risk of injury when working on construction sites, employees must wear personal protective equipment (hardhats, gloves and steel-toed boots) and follow safety programs and legislation.
