The District is comprised of over 42,000 students and 5,000 employees in 96 schools and other sites. Edmonton Catholic Schools requires a Foreman Carpenter to oversee the activities in the Fabrication Shop by supervising a crew of Carpenters/Apprentices that perform renovations, maintenance, repairs and some new construction. The job ensures employees achieve smooth workflow by delegating assignments, explaining procedures and reviewing completed assignments. This role will also require an individual with experience in a millwork fabrication shop environment including but not limited to: estimating, project planning, scheduling, and creation of shop/fabrication drawings experience with the various software elements pertaining to these scopes is a requirement including Microsoft Project and AutoCAD. Note: Software proficiency in these areas is considered a critical aspect of this role. The job is a source of knowledge within the department and projects overseen vary widely in scope, scale and complexity. The job also performs a variety of complex duties with minimal supervision and assignments will vary considerably depending on the unit served. The work requires the use of a variety of hand and power tools. There is considerable discretion exercised by this job in the performance of its regular duties. This is a permanent, full time (40 hrs. /week) position commencing as soon as possible. Salary is $ per month (gross) as per current AUPE Collective Agreement. Edmonton Catholic School District offers a comprehensive benefits program as part of its total compensation package. Qualifications: High School diploma, plus a current Alberta Journeyman Cabinetmaker Certificate; Red Seal cabinetmaker designation; Extensive experience required including overseeing the work of a crew; Knowledge of shop mathematics, including elementary geometry acquired through trades related training; Metal fabrication experience will be considered an asset including creating brakeshapes and safe operation of a metal brake; Working knowledge of Microsoft programs Word, Outlook and the Internet is required; Physically able to complete the duties of the job using appropriate tools and techniques (lifting up to 30 Kg (66 lb.); A valid Class 5 driver s license and the ability to travel to various sites within Edmonton; Ability to provide a clean driver s abstract upon hire and as requested; Possession of a full kit of recognized basic hand tools; Must be a Canadian Citizen or Permanent Resident. Staff Job Description Vacant Foreman Carpenter Foreman Carpenter Facilities Services Supervisor, Service Centre JOB PURPOSE: Give a brief summary of the job, covering the main responsibilities, the framework within which the job has to operate and the main contribution to the organization. The job oversees the activities in the Fabrication Shop by supervising a crew of Carpenters/Apprentices that perform renovations, maintenance, repairs and some new construction. Responsibilities require a qualified journeyman Cabinetmaker trade certificate, along with a Red Seal Cabinetmaker designation including related training and experience. JOB RESPONSIBILITIES AND ACTIVITIES: Normally a job has four to eight core responsibilities, each of which shows what the job is accountable for, within what framework, and what the added value is. For each responsibility, approximately four major activities should be described. List the core responsibilities in ascending order of importance. 1. Supervision and administrative responsibilities Establish standards for the various construction and maintenance projects Train staff in related work assignments/techniques and oversee the use of contemporary/traditional tools, materials and equipment Monitor and evaluate staff performance Maintain adequate stock of supplies to meet demands of projects assigned Direct efforts of in-house staff, apprentices, temporary staff and contractors on various projects Revised October

Project Management Review project plans, blueprints and design jobs with individuals requesting work Create fabrication/shop drawings AutoCAD experience is required Estimate time, material, manpower, equipment and supplies needed Develop work schedules with scheduling software including Microsoft Project, Implement crew assignments, inspect work regularly to ensure compliance with project designs Maintain records of operations, monitor inventories, prepare work orders and request supplies and equipment Select and ensure the proper use of tools and materials Participate in project planning activities and unit meetings 3. Repair, maintenance, renovation and manufacturing Oversee the construction of portable classrooms and other small structures Repair windows and door frames; replace locks Build cabinets, shelves and finishing carpenter work to various school equipment Repair floors and interior and exterior sheathing Fabricate a variety of items from wood or other materials within a carpentry shop Build, modify and repair structures to withstand varying loads Lay out according to blue prints - erect framework, siding, flooring and roofing and complete inside trim to required specifications Measure, square, saw, plane and clamp wooden sections into special shapes using table/hand/band/radial saws; jointers; drills and shapers and install the prefabricated materials in schools Assist department staff with a variety of projects and provide cover-off during absences as required Other duties as assigned by the Supervisor 4. Maintenance of worksite, materials and equipment Ensure worksites are clean and maintained within safety standards Oversee, and assist with, the cleanup of worksites Ensure tools and equipment are operating properly and report and/or replace as needed Record and maintain information related to tools, materials, estimates and work orders 5. Building site security Ensure materials and tools are safely operated and stored at all times Secure building as required depending on worksite requirements JOB QUALIFICATIONS KNOWLEDGE, EXPERIENCE, ABILITIES and SKILLS: Provide a list of the most important knowledge factors, skills and abilities including knowledge about practical procedures, specialized techniques, etc.; analytical and conceptual skills and abilities; and skills needed for direct interaction with others, not only diplomas and degrees. Knowledge of supervisory techniques, Collective Agreements and inventory control techniques Knowledge of Occupational Health and Safety regulations and legislation, regulations governing Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS) and Transportation of Dangerous Goods (TGD) Understanding of the Alberta Building Code Knowledge of department and unit policies, procedures, business and operations Working knowledge of Microsoft programs Word, Outlook and the Internet is required; Knowledge of electronic attendance system is an asset Standard First Aid/CPR is an asset Skills and Abilities: Computer skills including proficiency in Microsoft Project, AutoCAD, Microsoft office Applications Strong leadership skills and the ability to train, coach and mentor staff Ability to create and read plans, elevation drawings and specifications and fabricate items according to predetermined plans Ability to work without direct supervision Ability to exercise tact, courtesy and good judgment when dealing with other trades, school principals, teachers, students, co-workers and the general public Fluency in the English language including both oral and written communication skills Ability to schedule, plan task priorities for self and others, while managing several projects with conflicting demands Physically able to complete the duties of the Job using appropriate tools and techniques (lifting up to 30 Kg (66 lb.) The job supervises a crew of carpenters/apprentices and is expected to work with independence after receiving direction. Work is reviewed on completion to ensure project objectives and work standards have been met. Instructions on new tasks will be received from the supervisor. Work is performed within the district/department policies and procedures and is guided by construction and maintenance standards and principles and those established by the department. Work is completed in compliance with the Alberta Building Code, Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) and Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS), Transportation of Dangerous Goods (TDG) regulations and guidelines and the district s goals and objectives.
