1 UNIVRSITY OF LINCOLN JOB SCRIPTION JOB TITL PARTMNT LOCATION Commercial Manager School of Chemistry Brayford JOB NUMBR COS313 GRA 9 AT May 2017 RPORTS TO Head of School CONTXT The new Schools of Chemistry and Pharmacy are central to the University s strategy to extend its provision in STM subjects. The Schools development has been primed by major investment in research laboratory infrastructure and instrumentation and these have been incorporated into the Joseph Banks Laboratories (JBL) that form the research environment for the Schools of Chemistry, Life Sciences and Pharmacy. It is the intention to make facilities available to a range of users across the constituent Schools of the College of Science to enhance research outputs and offer high-level training and outstanding student experience for appropriate undergraduate and postgraduate degree programmes. Importantly, these faculties will play a key role in the development of Lincoln s knowledge transfer agenda supporting, in particular, the development of the Lincoln Science Innovation Park for which JBL represents the first stage in the development of a vibrant scientific community. It is envisaged that scientists from local/regional businesses will form a key component of instrument user communities and that provision of data and delivery of collaborative projects will form an important strand of activity for development of the scientific environment of the University. The University plans to commercialise aspect of this work under the working title of the JBL Science Centre. We are seeking to recruit a highly skilled commercial manager with expertise in scientific business development, particularly for applied analysis and formulation, and an ability to establish and develop customer relationships in scientific enterprises, and management of the development and delivery of projects for commercial partners. JOB PURPOS The main focus of the role is to provide commercial and scientific expertise to ensure effective exploitation of the University s resources and ensure professional delivery of services and projects to internal and external customers. This involves: Business management of the JBL Science Centre. evelopment and operational management of the commercial functions of the Centre. Provision of Commercial and Scientific xpertise to support the University s mission. Page 1 of 6

2 KY RSPONSIBILITIS Business Management of the Analytical Centre Contribute to the strategic development of the JBL Science Centre, liaising with key Head of School, Project and Instrument Scientists, Academic Project Leads and other KT Professionals. Manage the accounting of projects, providing primary liaison with University Finance team and appropriate (re-)allocation of project revenues and resources. Provision of financial reporting for the Centre (e.g. grant reporting, recharging schedules etc.) for the University, grant-awarding bodies and for the Centre s Annual Reports. Provide day-to-day supervision of monitoring processes for Centre through coordination of monitoring activities and analysis of the associated data analysis for recharging. evelop financial analysis for costing and pricing of Centre access, services and projects for both internal and external. Provide advice and, where appropriate, sign-off of project costing for use of Centre s facilities by internal and external clients. Work with the Project and Instrument Scientists to manage projects carried out by the Centre, particularly planning, risk analysis and monitoring. Carry out general managerial tasks as required working across the University academic, technical and administrative groups; carry out line management activities where necessary. Undertake supervision of project scientists including, where appropriate, placement and/or research students engaged with the Centre s projects. evelopment of Knowledge Transfer and Commercial Opportunities Lead and implement business development activity for the Centre including: Sales and marketing; Partnering activities; vents; Company visits; Conferences. Identify commercial opportunities for the Centre including research, knowledge transfer, collaboration and training opportunities with a focus on industrially funded R& projects. Provide primary liaison with clients for communication of project plans, quotations etc.. Where appropriate, and in conjunction with PIs and Project Scientists, providing information on progress in project delivery schedules. Lead the Centre s customer relationship management activity aligned to the University s Research and nterprise stragegies; develop and manage a Customer Relationship Management system for the Centre. 3 evelop and deliver against an agreed Commercial Business Plan. Take responsibility for overall success of Contract Research and KT project volume and commercial turn-over for the Centre. Be responsible for coordinating proposals and contract negotiations with external clients. evelop and maintain strong links with other centres and virtual companies; manage the interface between the Centre and regional/national networks in areas of specialisation, e.g. analytics, formulation, pharmaceutical products etc. Provision of Scientific and Commercial xpertise Provide expert support to Principal Investigators in development and commercialisation of service provision in designated commercial sectors including training/briefings on project costings. Provide market intelligence of competitor activities including pricing, service provision and changing customer priorities. Where appropriate provide advice and training on usage of specialist scientific facilities including instrumentation and software. Provide expertise in Analytical Chemistry and Formulation Science; devise and deliver training programmes in areas of specialism. Contribute to the development of academic training in areas of specialism including, where appropriate, curriculum design and module leadership. Provide expertise in Commercial Project elivery methodologies including commercial practice, professional standards (informed by appropriate Chartered Scientist qualifications) and Quality Assurance. Lead pricing strategy and associated activity for the Centre s project proposals. Where appropriate, provide operational management in scientific and marketing functions for University partner organisations (e.g. spin-out companies) including supervision of staff, provision of reports for Boards of irectors and for University Committees. Co-ordinate and liaise with multi-disciplinary teams of Business evelopment and marketing specialists, sharing best practice and developing the University s offering in Knowledge Transfer. In addition to the above, undertake such duties as may reasonably be requested and that are commensurate with the nature and grade of the post. Page 3 of 6

4 AITIONAL INFORMATION Scope and dimensions of the role The post holder will lead business development, relationship management, project proposal and management to develop commercial services organisation utilising the infrastructure of the Joseph Banks Laboratories. The post holder will also supervise project delivery and promote innovation and research opportunities to employers, alumni and other stakeholders. The post holder will work with other individuals engaged in business development/ industrial liaison across the University, include the College of Science and the wider University to share and promote opportunities as appropriate. They will also liaise with academic PIs to access expertise for project development and supervision, to develop the product portfolio and enhance research impact. The post has capacity for line management but currently there are no direct reports into the post, however, it is envisaged individuals may report into the role at a later date.
