1 Job Description Job Title: mployer: Reports to: Direct Reports: Surface Finish Technician Trustees of the Royal Air Force Museum ( the Museum ) Manager, Michael Beetham Conservation Centre (MBCC), Cosford None Responsible for: Volunteers as required Term: Full time, fixed term Purpose of the Job To carry out the surface finish and fabric work requirements on aircraft plus other large 3D objects in the RAF Museum Collection. This will involve paint application, fabric work, surveying exhibits, writing reports, project planning, ordering materials and controlling resources. Tasks will be carried out with the minimum of supervision and within the Health & Safety at Work Act Accountabilities To complete the surface finish and fabric work requirements on all aircraft and large 3D objects in the RAF Museum collection (including those on external display) in accordance with RAF Museum standards To ensure that all aircraft and large 3D objects are properly conserved for the benefit of future generations and to only replace and replicate materials and components as a last resort. This will also involve chemical treatments of corroded parts and restoring surface finishes To undertake trade-related aircraft maintenance on the RAF Museum collection at Cosford, Hendon and Stafford plus RAF Museum aircraft on loan to other museums. This will also involve compilation of work logs To ensure that the current Health and Safety at Work and COSHH regulations relating to the spray bay, paint store and other work areas are adhered to 1

2 To carry out Health and Safety at Work Risk Assessments in work areas away from the Paint Shop prior to commencement of work To provide supervision on the work of the MBCC Tech Team, Apprentices and Volunteers on any task relating to paint or paint products To ensure that all tasks relating to public safety are progressed at the earliest possible opportunity To order tools, materials, paint products, fabric and equipment and to maintain other stocks of materials within this specialist trade To correctly maintain all engineering tools and equipment, ensuring that unserviceable equipment is inhibited from use To carry out engineering surveys and to produce detailed trade related reports and plans for projects as directed by Manager, MBCC To assist with the security measures required by RAFM Cosford, including acting as key orderly for the MBCC Paint Shop To become familiar with the operation of the spray bay plant, including user maintenance, to ensure that it is operated within the approved parameters To report any Health and Safety at Work, security, administrative problems and work service defects to the Manager MBCC and the Admin Officer at the earliest opportunity To liaise with contractors undertaking repair work within the MBCC Paint Shop To assist with non-trade related MBCC work in support of tasks or projects The position is based at the RAF Museum Cosford site. However, work at RAF Museum London, RAF Museum Stafford, museums with RAF Museum objects on loan plus foreign travel will be task dictated at the discretion of the Manager, MBCC 2

The post is based at the Cosford site but work at RAFM London, RAFM Stafford, museums with RAFM objects on loan and foreign travel will be task dictated at the discretion of the Manager, MBCC 3

5 Selection Criteria CRITRIA STANDARD /D VIDNC Qualifications Relevant qualification in Surface Finish Application (City & Guilds or equivalent). Application / Certificates Work xperience At least 5 years experience in application of surface finish on large 3D objects (aircraft, vehicles etc.). Application / At least 5 years experience in preparation for surface finish work on large 3D objects (aircraft, vehicles etc.). Application / At least 5 years experience of Irish Linen fabric application work. D Application/ Skills and Knowledge xtensive knowledge in Health & Safety of paint related products. Application/ Knowledge/experience of aircraft disassembly and reassembly procedures. D Application / Must hold a Driving Licence.
