Work closely with the relevant Faculty Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Faculty PVC), Heads of epartments (Ho), Heads of School (HoS) and Heads of Faculty Research Centre to deliver high level technical support to staff and students. eputise for the Head of Technical Services as appropriate and be an active member of the Technical Services Management team.

2 Key Tasks Strategic Planning Work in partnership with the Faculty PVC(s), Hos, Faculty Heads of Research and Knowledge and Heads of University Centres for Research and Knowledge xchange to: evelop a good understanding of various stakeholder needs and requirements. stablish priorities in order to provide direction for service delivery. evelop a Faculty-focused estate strategy and deliver resulting infrastructure projects. Collaborate with the Head of Technical Services, Faculty PVCs, Hos and HoSs in the development of strategies and delivery plans for Technical Services, which support the University s Teaching, Research and Knowledge xchange Strategies, and adapts to changing institutional priorities and requirements. Leadership, Team management and evelopment Lead, line manage and motivate a team of Technical Service Managers ensuring that the technical staff deliver an excellent service to staff and students. This will involve: Actively reviewing service levels and initiating and contributing to continuous improvement activities. Constantly seeking new and more effective ways of working that deliver value for money and build resilience in a rapidly changing academic environment. stablishing and monitoring clear objectives that align individuals and teams to business and team objectives. To work collaboratively as member of the senior management team to develop strategies that facilitate cross-team and service-wide working and promotes a customer-focussed approach to service delivery. Contributes to the strategic development of Technical Services, particularly in relation to: ncreased professional registration of Technical staff. ncreased engagement with national partners ie. ST, Science Council and HaT. elivery of the Technicians Commitment and the University s Athena Swan and Race Charter submissions.

3 Responsible for the recruitment of staff and undertaking Professional evelopment Reviews. n conjunction with the Technical Services evelopment Manager, develop and implement appropriate programmes of staff development and training activity within the context of Technical Services. Liaison, Networking and Communication Work in partnership with key professional service areas including states and Building, Facilities, Health and Safety (H&S) to develop and deliver infrastructure projects for technical spaces and buildings. Lead, contribute and support a range of change and development projects and initiatives both Faculty based and, or, University or Service wide that support the delivery of Faculty and University objectives. Seek out and promote external engagement to maximise opportunities to enhance the profile and reputation of Technical Services at Manchester Met. Work collaboratively with other members of the Senior Management Team to develop a Technical Services communications strategy, incorporating such activity as blogs, social media, film or video activities to promote technical services to internal and external stakeholders and ensures that information is communicated in a timely and consistent manner. Take a lead role in the delivery of the annual Technical Services Conference. Planning and Organising Resources and ecision Making As a member of the Technical Services Senior Management Team; contribute to the overall management of the service, engaging in all relevant planning processes related to the management of budgets, resources, space, equipment and staff to ensure technical services needs as well as those of the Faculty and University are fully addressed. Health and Safety and Risk Management Work closely with the University H&S epartment to ensure robust systems are in place to ensure compliance with University policies and statutory regulations. nsure appropriate H&S responsibilities and management of risk are embedded across all technical service staff responsibilities. Facilitate appropriate information instruction, training and supervision for technical services staff. mplement and monitor internal assurance systems for safety and risk management to ensure that actions arising from internal or external inspections are managed effectively.

4 nsure the maintenance of the relevant risk registers to reflect and manage any operational and strategic risks that may affect the safe delivery of technical services across the business. Support the HoS and PVC at the University H&S panel and committee meetings where required. Financial Management Work alongside the PVC, HoS and Finance to develop the services annual financial plan reflecting Faculty and University strategy. Assist The Head of Technical Services in developing in-year forecasts and variance analysis and propose and implement corrective action to address variance to the financial plan. nsure the delivery of a cost effective service, which provides value for money and supports the recovery of staff time from research and enterprise income. Work closely with the University procurement advisors to ensure that value for money is met for procurement activity across the service. Support the development and writing of investment proposals, research grant applications and other new developments that require Technical Services support. evelop initiatives across the service as ways of securing additional income and commercialising where appropriate the provision of technical services. Special Features Some evening and weekend work will be required supporting open days, outreach and WP events. Some travel maybe required. Miscellaneous You will ensure that appropriate management systems and procedures are in place to meet your health and safety duties and responsibilities contained within the University s health and safety policy. n particular you will ensure that appropriate risk assessments are carried out in respect of significant hazards and that safety inspections are undertaken on at least an annual cycle in each workplace under your control. You are responsible for applying the University s qual Opportunities Policy in your own area of responsibility and in your general conduct.

5 You have a responsibility to promote high levels of customer care within your own areas of work. You are expected to co-operate with the PR process, engaging in the setting of objectives in order to assist in the monitoring of performance and the development of the individual. You will assess the training and development needs of each member of staff under your control to ensure they are adequately supported in relation to their work responsibilities. Such other relevant duties commensurate with the grade of the post as may be assigned by the Manager in agreement with you. Such agreement should not be unreasonably withheld. You may be required to undertake a specific Health & Safety role, commensurate with your grade, to support the University in meeting its statutory Health & Safety obligations. This could include acting as a S Assessor, First Aider, Fire Marshall or epartmental Safety Co-ordinator. The allocation of such roles will be subject to the provision of appropriate training and assessment of competence. You may, with reasonable notice, be required to work at any of the Manchester Metropolitan University sites. You are responsible for assessing and managing risk for all elements of work within your own area/team and for ensuring effective risk management processes are in place.
