Eligibility criterio for food ad other federal supplemet programs ad beefits varies by household size, based o a percetage of the Federal Poverty Level. 3. Supermarkets are large-format grocery stores with all food departmets preset, icludig produce, meats, seafood, caed goods ad packaged goods. Supermarkets are typically chai stores but may also be superceters ad iteratioal stores; these stores have aual sales of $2 millio or more ad have 3 or more cash registers. 4. The Coveiece Stores category icludes a variety of stores that sell food products, but food is ot their mai busiess. These stores iclude chai coveiece stores, gas statio coveiece stores, pharmacies, ad discout/dollar stores. They are typically chai operated. 5. Small Grocery Stores, sometimes called mom & pop stores or corer stores, are small format grocery stores that are typically idepedetly owed ad operated. They have aual sales of less tha $2 millio ad have limited food departmets. 6. The Other Food Stores category iclude Covetioal Club stores (i.e. BJ s), Military Commissaries, mixed markets, ad public markets. 7. USDA Food Deserts are defied as low-icome cesus tracts where residets are >0.5 miles (urba) or >10 miles (rural) from the earest supermarket. 8. Feedig America s Map the Meal Gap s food isecurity rates are determied usig data from the Curret Populatio Survey o idividuals i food isecure households; America Commuity Survey five year estimates o media household icomes, poverty rates, homeowership, ad race ad ethic demographics; ad 2013 America Commuity Survey oe year estimates o uemploymet rates. 9. The average dollar amout spet o food per week by food secure idividuals is divided by 21 (3 meals per day x 7 days per week) weighted by the cost-of-food idex to derive a localized estimate. Food expeditures for food secure idividuals were used to esure that the result best reflected the cost of a adequate diet. 10. Agriculture of the Middle (AOTM) ecompasses a spectrum of farms ad raches that are decliig because they are too small to be served well by commodity markets ad too large to be served well by direct markets. A Aimal Feedig Operatio (AFO) meas a feedlot where: No-aquatic aimals are cofied, fed, ad maitaied for at least 45 days i ay 12-moth period; ad crops vegetatio, forage growth, or post-harvest residues are ot sustaied i the ormal growig seaso over ay portio of the lot or facility. There are two types of AFOS: Cofied Aimal Feedig Operatio ad Marylad Aimal Feedig Operatio. Cofied Aimal Feedig Operatios are medium or large AFO s that discharge or propose to discharge maure, litter, or process wastewater. Propose to discharge meas that your facility is desiged, costructed, operated, or maitaied, such that a discharge to surface waters of the State WILL occur. Marylad Aimal Feed Operatios (MAFO) are large aimal feedig operatios that do ot discharge or propose to discharge maure, litter, or process wastewater. Broiler Chickes AFO with dry maure rages: medium = 37, ,999 birds/farm or <100,000 ft2, large = >125,000 birds/farm or 100,000 ft2. Layer He AFO rages: medium = 25,000-81,999 aimals/farm, large = 82,000 or more aimals/farm. Dairy Cattle AFO rages: medium = aimals/farm, large = 700+ aimals/ farm. Beef Cattle AFO rages: medium = aimals/farm, large = 1000 or more aimals/farm. Hog AFO rages: 750 or more aimals/farm, depedet o weight of aimals. 12. Farms that grow ad sell food locally i some maer. Food processig ad distributio facility lists were derived from multiple federal, state ad couty level food permit lists. Categories of food processig facilities, slaughter facilities, ad distributio ad storage facilities are either mutually exclusive or a exhaustive list of every possible type of facility. 14. The Marylad Departmet of Agriculture collects data o Best Maagemet Practices for coservatio, 3 of which are listed, as part of a effort to restore the health of the Chesapeake Bay Watershed. 15.
