1 Job escription Job Title: mployer: Reports to: irect Reports: Collections Care Assistant Trustees of the Royal Air Force Museum ( the Museum ) Collections Care Officer None; supervision of volunteers Term: Full-time, fixed-term contract from January June 2018 Funding: The Royal Air Force Museum Purpose of the Job To work with a team of staff in the Collections Care Team and supervise the day-to-day work of volunteers, to ensure high standards in collections care are carried out across the museum exhibitions and storage facilities. To support the wide Collections Services department in meeting key strategic objectives, notably the delivery of the RAF Centenary Programme, Museum Accreditation Standards and the Collections Review. To support the wider work of the Museum by interacting with other departments, in particular with Visitor xperience Team, states, Marketing and Volunteer & ngagement departments. Accountabilities To support the delivery of the Museum s Collections Care and Conservation Plan in accordance with Museum Accreditation and other professional standards. To support the delivery of the Museum s Collections evelopment Strategy. To support the delivery of the Museum s RAF Centenary Programme. To support and facilitate the Museum s commercial activities. 1
2 Job Functions: Collections Care Preserve, stabilise and improve access to the Royal Air Force Collections, by carrying out preventive conservation programmes across the London site, including IPM, disaster planning and conservation cleaning both in situ and in the conservation studio. Carry out condition assessments on in-going and out-going loans, and inspect associated exhibition environments. Confidently work in a team to handle, move, transport, and install exhibits for display and storage. Supervise volunteers a minimum of two days a week, who will assist with preventive tasks across the museum. Support the preparation and installation of three new exhibitions as part of the RAF Centenary Programme in Spring Assist with the administration related to the conservation of the collection, including stockchecking, filing and updating conservation records on the Collection Management database. Help plan and deliver Collections Care training for museum staff and volunteers. Support the effective implementation of Collections Care policies and procedures across the museum sites. Advocate the importance of professional Collections Care and Management standards to our audiences. Support the Museum Registrar in the implementation, operation and maintenance of Collections Management processes, including location control, movement, transportation and associated documentation tasks, ensuring conformity with SPCTRUM procedures. Support the igitisation Officer by condition assessing, moving and storing objects required for the Historic Hendon project. Relationships Liaise successfully with the other Collections Care Assistant in the Collections Care Team on core and Centenary projects at the Museum, supporting on tasks when necessary. Supervise and co-ordinate the work of trained members of staff and volunteers when conducting Collections Care tasks. Cultivate internal relationships that cross team boundaries and demonstrate positive collaboration and problem solving with all team members, delivering museum-wide programme and objectives. 2
3 nsure effective communication with all stakeholders, both internally and externally. Build and maintain partnerships with relevant external contacts and stakeholders. Policies and Procedures Uphold both the spirit and letter of the Museums Association s Code of thics Comply with Health and Safety legislation Adhere to organisational policies and procedures to protect people and the Museum s reputation. evelop and maintain policies and procedures that support and deliver departmental objectives Comply with Collections Management Policies & Procedures Professionally challenge procedures that do not add value to the organisation. Personal Responsibilities Support the Museum s values. Work as part of a team and support colleagues across the Museum. Protect the reputation of the Museum. Serve as an advocate for the RAF Museum. Hours and Physical Conditions Hours: Full-time, 40 hours per week. The post is based at the London site but work at all Museum sites (London, Cosford and Stafford) and at other venues in the UK and abroad may be required. This role will involve manual handling. 4 Selection Criteria CRITRIA STANAR / VINC eg. Application/interview/certificates Qualifications ducated to undergraduate degree level or equivalent level of knowledge gained through employment. Conservation / Collections Care postgraduate qualification or equivalent work experience in a conservation role within a heritage environment. Work xperience A minimum of 6 months paid or unpaid work experience in a museum or heritage organisation. Work experience in conservation / collections care within a museum or heritage environment, carrying out preventive conservation tasks. xperience of applying professional standards for handling, packing, movement, transportation and exhibition of museum objects. xperience in documenting museum objects. xperience in using Collections Management databases. Application/Certificates Application/Certificates xperience of handling a variety of museum objects. xperience in assisting the development and promotion of access to museum collections. xperience working at height for object installation and de-installation work. 4
5 Skills and Interest in Collections Care and Knowledge Collections Management within a museum context. Confidence to supervise volunteers on long and short term collection care projects Ability to understand and accurately implement preventive conservation procedures and standards. Knowledge and understanding of object handling procedures and awareness of preservation risks. Ability to work quickly, efficiently and accurately. Possess the drive and ability to meet targets, both individually and as a Application/interview member of a dedicated team. Able to deliver Collections Care training to museum staff and volunteers. Self-motivation to persist at repetitive tasks requiring concentration for long periods of time. Good standards of spelling and grammar. Computer literate and preferably experienced in a number of software Application packages. Full, clean driving license Knowledge of and interest in the history of the Royal Air Force. 5
