2 Role summary We are seeking a full time service designer at Innovation Unit. Senior Service Designers at Innovation Unit are responsible for: client delivery - leading smaller stand alone projects or strands of work within much larger projects; developing our service design capability; and supporting business development activity where there is a significant service design component. We have recently started work on a large, long term innovation programme in adult mental health. We need our service designer to work on this programme part time. The programme will involve some work based in our offices in London, but also require working away from home in Scotland, Northern England and southern England. About Innovation Unit Innovation Unit is a 20-person social enterprise with a big mission - to create new solutions for thriving societies. Solutions that have impact at scale. In recent years we have helped to transform mental health services in Lambeth, we have run a major, randomised control trial of project based learning in this country, we have developed new models of children s centres that reach many more families with 25% cost savings and we are currently co-leading the DfE s innovation programme to transform Children s Social Care. 3 About the role Main responsibilities 1. Purpose Client delivery - delivering elements of projects and contributing to the high performance of project teams Client deliver - managing and delivering research, prototyping and co-design activities on client projects Managing and developing high quality visual design outputs ranging from illustrations and workshop materials to video, and animation on projects and for the organisation Championing service design and its role in delivering our mission, and supporting the learning of other members of our team Developing and maintaining strong relationships with clients and our wider IU team Supporting the Innovation Unit (IU) service design capability Supporting business development activity 2. Key responsibilities Client delivery - Design, development and delivery of design workshops and working sessions with clients and users Being responsible for the development of workshop materials Producing and managing the production/print of workshop materials Being responsible for the logistical and stakeholder organisation of workshops Communicating with client group Facilitating creative, group-based activities and discussions involving clients and project stakeholders Client delivery - Managing and delivery of a range of research activities, for example Desk based research and analysis Recruiting participants, developing research questions, sampling and agreeing scope Designing data collection tools and methods, and materials Collecting data through in depth interviews, observation, focus groups, shadowing, and other ethnographic techniques and workshops Facilitation of analysis and insight sessions, report writing and synthesis of research Management of research archiving and protection Ensuring that the research ethical code of conduct is adhered to 02

4 Data visualisation, design outputs and external communications Developing high quality data visualisation outputs, and manage the process from concept to delivery Visualising data using a variety of media including static, graphic, interactive and experiential Generating awareness and appetite for the use and value of data visualisation elements within current projects Generating web copy and blogs as well as communicating emerging findings at conferences etc. Actively use Twitter on behalf of the IU Managing yourself Ensuring that your project work is delivered to time and budget Managing your time effectively, including inputting your utilisation and planning assumptions regularly to Kimble Providing effective feedback on workload and capacity Business Development Background research and contributing to new proposals. Identify opportunities for further work that could follow on from current projects Forming effective and trusted working relationships with clients. Representing the organisation and the project at conferences and meetings. Development our Service Design Practice Help others to improve the quality of our design-led processes and outputs. Be a champion for design thinking, design-led processes and creative approaches to research and problem-solving. Person Specification Essential Skills, Knowledge and Experience At least 3 years experience of working as a service designer on social problems. Recognised Masters Degree (essential) Excellent skills with Google Suite, Adobe CS - InDesign, Illustrator & Photoshop and Kimble Track record of growing design-led capabilities and practices in teams and organisations Experience of applying service design methods within system change programmes Knowledge of methodologies for adopting and adapting innovations in new contexts 03

5 Role Details Salary and Benefits: From 25k+ annum, depending on experience, plus 3% contributory pension and 27 days paid holiday.
