Canada Wood House Conceived by architects, Hinton Cook as a sustainable dwelling, the design of Canada Wood House examines its economic, environmental and social sustainability at every stage, including: Minimising quantity of imported materials to site Recycling and reclamation during construction Energy conservation, in the embodied energy of materials during construction and operation of the house Water conservation Promotion of bio-diversity. Canada Wood house has been designed as a long use, adaptable building, to be fully adaptable to the changing needs of a family as it ages. The building is designed and orientated to maximise solar gain. When that source is insufficient, the proposed principal source of heating and water could be a ground source heat pump. A wood burning stove can provide additional heating in the main living spaces. Timber from the sustainable management of the woodland can provide fuel for the stove. 183 sqm of photovoltaic collector (PV) is integrated into the roof to supply energy to exceed the anticipated consumption averaged over the year. This can provide sufficient generation of electricity to provide offset for all CO2 emissions, resulting in net annual emissions of zero. High levels of thermal insulation will be provided to achieve Passivhaus standards. Efficient whole house mechanical ventilation with heat recovery has been designed to reduce ventilated heat loss. Other energy efficient measures include low energy lighting systems and appliances with A+++ ratings.
