It strives t cultivate a strng natinal vice fr Canadian prfessinal dance and t supprt the develpment f resurces fr this field f artistic expressin. It is the members f the Canadian Dance Assembly, thrugh their activities, experience and participatin wh prvide the dynamism and synergy that make the rganizatin vital in the Canadian arts milieu. Having an rganizatin that unites us in ur wrk builds cmmunity and alleviates the feeling f wrking in islatin. It is imprtant t have an rganizatin that has a pulse n the natinal scene t help make cnnectins acrss the cuntry and bring us tgether. Thrugh cnferences, wrkshps and netwrking events, CDA fills a niche by creating natinal prgramming, cnnectivity and crss-disciplinary cllabratin. We strive t be respected by ur membership and be recgnized as a leader they can rely n and t whm the membership cmes t fr tls, resurces, questins, r advice. CDA advcates n sectr-wide issues that ur members d nt have the capacity t wrk n independently. CDA desires t have impact within the cmmunity and fsters psitive change in the landscape f Canadian dance. We strive t increase the presence f dance within the public and plitical eye and als within the media. The rganizatin serves t supprt the dance cmmunity s that it is a healthy and viable sectr. Mandate The Canadian Dance Assembly (CDA) is the vice f the prfessinal dance sectr in Canada and advcates fr a healthy, sustainable envirnment in which prfessinal dance practice can grw and thrive. CDA is a reputable surce f infrmatin n the current state f dance in Canada and prvides representatin t plicy makers and the public. CDA enables its natinal membership f dance prfessinals and rganizatins t cnnect with their peers thrugh regular cmmunicatins, cnferences, frums and wrkshps, and facilitates pprtunities fr netwrking, dialgue and exchange relevant t the Canadian dance sectr. 1 P a g e
3 Value Statement The Canadian Dance Assembly is a member driven rganizatin that, thrugh the design and delivery f its activities, prgrams and services, uphlds the cre principles f being a cllabrative, inclusive, cnsultative, nn-partisan, practive, diplmatic and transparent rganizatin that represents the diverse prfessinal dance milieu in all regins f Canada. The rganizatin ultimately exists t serve the needs f its members and functins as a bttm up rganizatin respnding t their needs. We strive t have an increased presence in Ottawa in rder t make cnnectins and influence plicy makers and leading plitical figures. It is imprtant that dance has a natinal vice at the same table as ther arts service rganizatins. By cllabrating and advcating with a united vice we can be increasingly effective. Tgether we are strnger. CURRENT REALITY As part f the strategic planning prcess, the prfessinal leadership f the Canadian Dance Assembly undertk a knwledge based self-assessment and a thrugh review f its prgram and resurce centres f activity. This examinatin revealed: 1. Leadership: Prfessinal leadership and Bard leadership wrking well tgether. 2. Prgramming: Prgramming has been streamlined t better serve ur prfessinal membership, fcusing ur services t better suit the members needs and available resurces. In the past years, CDA has fcused n I lve dance / J aime la danse, Natinal Dance Week and the I lve dance Awards. Based n recent feedback, CDA has put the I lve dance campaign n hld s it can have an increased fcus n plitical advcacy. We als wrk twards creating prgramming in partnership with ther service rganizatins, and have a gal t increase engagement with digital technlgy. 3. Organizatin is in the prcess f regaining financial balance, but is still unstable: The rganizatin is building capacity and explring different rganizatinal mdels. Taking steps t right size the rganizatin. 4. Infrastructure: CDA infrastructure needs attentin and needs t be reinvigrated. Hardware, sftware and ffice space all need attentin. 5. Human resurces: Strng cre prfessinal and vlunteer team, but because f financial strain had t reduce staff. There is a human resurces deficit. The CDA strives t: THE VIEW AHEAD Increase and strengthen ur relatinship with ur members. Wrk twards a psitin f respect and prminence within the arts sectr in Canada. Build relatinships n a lcal, prvincial, natinal and internatinal level with ther arts service rganizatins. Strengthen ur relatinships with elected representatives. Explre partnerships utside f the arts. 2 P a g e
4 Build ur capacity t d research. Build digital strategies and platfrms as an additinal frm f revenue. Have diversity and pluralism integrated within every aspect f ur wrk Capitalize n electins fr the capacity t build fllwers and supprters. Realize the financial recvery plan and put it int actin. Have adequate infrastructure and HR resurces t carry ut daily activities. STRATEGIC RATIONALE We have listened and must cntinue t listen t ur members and skatehlders. We must be fiscally respnsible and live within ur means. We need an adaptive mindset (listening t the scial and plitical landscape). We believe that cntractin is needed and useful t build a strng cre that will subsequently generate grwth fr the rganizatin. We wrk cllabratively in rder t share/ maximize limited resurces and t build bridges beynd dance. The Strategic Pririties encmpass 6 majr gals: STRATEGIC PRIORITIES GOAL 1 INCREASE ADVOCACY SERVICES ENGAGE OUR MEMBERS TO BE POLITICALLY AWARE AND ACTIVE The CDA (ED and Bard) will meet with a minimum f 5 pliticians each year. CDA will have an advcacy cmmunicatins strategy in place by March The CDA will take a leadership rle in the Canadian Arts Calitin (CAC) and will cntinue t wrk clsely with members f the Perfrming Arts Alliance (PAA) n natinal advcacy r jint initiatives. Mnitr prvincial and municipal electins and implicatins t the arts sectr, circulate infrmatin t the membership. Use the Dance Mapping research f the Canada Cuncil t increase plitician awareness f dance, circulate relevant stats r tls fr members t help them make their case. Create an Advcacy strategy specific t the 2015 electin. Create an advcacy tl kit t be used by ur members as well as letter templates r ther resurce tls. Wrk with the Advcacy Cmmittee t respnd t members needs. GOAL 2 INCREASE MEMBERSHIP AND ENGAGEMENT THROUGH PROGRAMS, SERVICES AND RESOURCES Transitin t a single membership renewal date and implementatin f autmatic renewal ptins fr rganizatinal members (if they chse). 3 P a g e
5 Wrk with the membership cmmittee t retain members and recruit new membership frm acrss the cuntry. Increase renewal retentin rate by building trust within the membership. Thrugh the engagement f Internatinal Dance Day / Natinal Dance Week, recruit new supprting members. Offer increased services such as an affrdable Health Insurance prgram ptin. Diversify membership by ensuring representatin frm all crners f Canada and within all disciplines. Increase partnership with reginal service rganizatins and reginal pt-in prgram. Develp ur partnership with the CADA rganizatins and wrk tgether t keep thse members infrmed and engaged in CDA activity. Revitalize the website and member lgin area and increase engagement nline thrugh scial media activity. Increase number f regular e-bulletins circulated thrughut the year. Hst next majr cnference in 2015 and I lve dance Awards ceremny with the gal f increasing engagement in prgramming and attendance, a smaller reginally fcused meeting will fllw in 2016 and anther larger scale cnference then in Imprve cmmunicatins by develping a cmprehensive Cmmunicatins plan. GOAL 3 REACH THE GOALS OF THE FINANCIAL RECOVERY PLAN - INCREASE STABLE REVENUES AND REDUCE EXPENSES STRATIGICALLY Clse the incme gap by 2015 and eliminate the accumulated deficit by Mnitr cash flw and frecasting dcuments thrugh regular mnthly calls with the Finance Cmmittee. Develp strategies fr dealing with cash flw issues that tend t arise at the end f the fiscal year. Revenues and Expenditures are apprpriately time-phased and n budget (individual dnatin campaign will be mved t September frm December) Establish a Fundraising Cmmittee t help surce ut new areas f funding. Develp new spnsr relatins thrugh pprtunities such as the 2015 cnference. Analyze expenses and seek pprtunity fr imprving cst reductin (eg. Rent fee decrease). GOAL 4 REPRESENT THE DIVERSITY AND BREDTH OF THE ENTIRE DANCE COMMUNITY - TO BE EMBEDDED IN ALL COMMITTEES AND COUNCILS Increase engagement and ensure representatin f every aspect f Canadian Dance within ur membership. Establishment f a fully dcumented bard recruitment strategy, bard recruitment kit, and bard manual which reflects the diversity f the dance cmmunity. Wrk with the Pluralism Cmmittee t circulate cmmunicatins/educatin and awareness items as part f ur e-news circulatin. Update ffice plicies and develp plicies n anti-racism, access and equity. 4 P a g e
6 Undertake reginal meetings with an awareness f a pluralistic agenda and prgramming. Ensure each Standing Cuncil has a Pluralism Cmmittee representative. Increase ur membership with a pluralistic apprach. CDA is recgnized as a leader in pluralistic engagement. GOAL 5 STRENGTHEN NETWORK CULTIVATE REGIONAL, NATIONAL AND INTERNATIONAL PARTNERSHIPS Increase CDA presence at reginal events. Strengthen the functin f the Standing Cuncils, establish clear gals, bjectives and Terms f Reference. Increase cllabratin with the Perfrming Arts Alliance n jint initiatives and activities. Strengthen ur netwrk by increasing member attendance at CDA cnferences and events. Cntinue t wrk clsely with ur Reginal Arts Service Organizatinal partners n events such as Internatinal Dance Day. Increase attendance at natinal and internatinal events (such as Dance USA, TanzCngress) Wrk with the reginal service rganizatins t hst Internatinal Dance Day / Natinal Dance Week each year GOAL 6 STRENGTHEN THE ORGANIZATIONAL INFRASTRUCTURE HARDWARE, SOFTWARE AND OFFICE SPACE Update technical equipment and prgrams.
