Yet another neighbourhood shopping centre, Hampton Hargate, has a convenience store, crèche, dental and veterinary practices. (The state-of-the-art NHS Peterborough City Hospital is found in Bretton Gate, with a walk-in centre situated on Thorpe Road). Peterborough s pedestrianised and fully accessible streets, permanent under-cover market and wealth of eating places make serious shopping a pleasure. Marks & Spencer, John Lewis, Sainsbury s, Asda and Waitrose lead the retail sector, with an old-fashioned arcade, individual stores, Continental and farmers markets adding interest and choice. The planned extension to the major shopping centre, Queensgate, will provide a cinema and food court. Peterborough is the region s prime entertainment destination, with three venues the Key Theatre, Cresset and Broadway - hosting great programmes of live entertainment including shows from London. Classical recitals are held in the magnificent cathedral and Shakespeare performed at local stately homes. The city also boasts a museum and art gallery, multi-screen cinema, independent Arts Cinema, ten-pin bowling, an international speedway and greyhound stadium. The nearby East of England Showground hosts events such as the BMF Bike Show, County Show and concerts. The outdoor scene is equally inviting. Peterborough has pleasant parks, Green Wheel cycling and walking routes, an outdoor lido (as well as an indoor swimming pool) and several golf clubs within easy reach.
